The Dragons of Tarkir Arrive in Latest Magic Set
March 18, 2015 by dracs
The latest set for Magic the Gathering, the Dragons of Tarkir, will be going to pre-release this coming weekend (March 21st - 22nd). All the cards have now appeared in Wizards of the Coasts' card gallery, including the mighty dragons which characterise the entire block.
A Dragonlord has risen to lead each of the different clans, each with its own distinct character and play style. First ,we have Dromoka, whose power paralyses the opponent utterly during your turn.
Then there is the sinister Kolaghan, who causes players to fear their own graveyard and limits their options to almost none.
The magnificent Ojutai opens up new tactical options each turn it deals combat damage as it lets you cycle through your library for the cards you need.
Finally we have the greedy Silumgar, who steals the enemy's Planeswalkers out from under their very nose!
Of course, the story of Magic the Gathering all revolves around the Planeswalkers and no set would be complete without some of these multi-dimensional sorcerers, such Narset Transcendent.
Narest is undoubtedly very useful, especially against mana combinations which rely heavily upon their sorceries and instants. However, in a set so devoted to dragons one Planeswalker stands supreme.
Sarkhan has always been a powerful Planeswalker, but this new version of him takes the cake, as well as all the dragons! There are ways to counter this of course, a number of the cards in the new set have protection from dragons, but should you let Sarkhan build up his power to such a degree you will find yourself swamped by some of the most powerful creatures in the game!
Are you planning to attend a Magic pre-release event? What cards in the new set are you excited for?

I’ll be attending a pre release as usual. Set looks ramped up for power. Sadly I collect all the dragons so my trade binder is going to be battered and I will need a bigger boat I mean binder to keep my dragons in.
Narset seems to be very good as planeswalker. Besides she has 6 loyalty with 4 mana. That is something that is really rare to see. New Sarkhan is now former Temur as far as colors go and that last skill of his is devastating if you can pull it off.
All new elder dragons do seem rather good but I do wonder how useful they are going to be in standard.
The downside to Narset, is that her +1 ability doesn’t protect her all that well (vs Elspeth pumps out 1/1 soldiers; Kiora prevents damage from target permanent; etc…). I suspect the 6 loyalty is to off-set the fact she is typically going to get hit.
The big ultimates you can forget about. If you hit it with either of these Planeswalkers, then you were winning anyway.
I am dreading this set my bro has a dragon deck already these will make it insane!!
I was looking forward to playing at a pre-release, but unfortunately it has fallen at the same time as a taekwondo grading and I do want me that green belt. Maybe I can make it a three mana drop shiny.
Why not have a BoW release event using something like OCTGN?
I’m pretty sure I’d sideboard Crux of Fate. It would be devastating against Sarkhan’s last ability.
I wish i could go to a pre release but work… stupid money why do i need you…
by the way Sarkhan looks broken… My wife wants a Dragon Deck…… wonder how much he will be selling for?
Hard to say what Sarkhan is atm. 5 mana to cast, you’ll need something else to protect him, which may very well be his -2 ability. The ultimate will pretty much win you the game, but you’ve got to ask yourself what was your opponent doing to let you get that many loyalty points in the first place? If you had the board presence / protection to get him up to 8 points, then you were most likely winning anyway. Would you have been better off with another 5 mana spell? Would that have closed the game quicker? With regards… Read more »
