nice end to the tutorial, now that was a small brush you could count the bristles?

Very nice work as usual Romain, as you say, between Manta and Infinity this will be useful to emulate. A couple of more general points about this: 1: 4 episodes spread since Jan 29 is too fragmented to be useful to follow at the time they’re released, each time I’ve had to remind myself what colours etc were used in the previous episodes. Even the best wet palette would struggle to keep paints fresh for anyone trying it out. 2: in the final episode I’m struggling to see the final fine face work – either some very macro video or… Read more »

I agree, but 1) scheduling isn’t my department, and 2) alas, we make do with what we have… we were still fiddling with the camera setup at that point.

Nice tutorial, but the video camera can’t keep up with the face detailing. I just see Romain dabbing away at the minis face with a small brush. What actually happens to the model is hard to see.
Would it be an idea to make super-closeup pictures of the model between stages and overlay these as an inset into the video. Or if that is too much trouble to edit, just place the pictures with the article.
@Romain I’d like to see how you tackle what i will call (and hopefully not unintentionally offend anyone) “variants of african origin skintones”. There are potentially a wide variety of hues and tones of african origin skin, some that I have attempted in the past and never seem to get right.
I do tackle them, and they’re coming as a tutorial ! 🙂

However, I do agree with coxjul’s thoughts regarding the spread of time of the four episodes, six weeks is way too long guys especially when Romain recorded it in one hit.
The close-up shots &/or video footage would be a great addition.
Romain’s work & efforts really deserves it.
Romain, for the love of god, if you’re going to paint with just washes, use some acrylic medium in there. Diluting your paint so heavily with just water makes the results look awful.

I know people have tried to characterise me at some sort of GW white knight, but that really couldn’t be further from the truth. I simply made the comment I did because I think you are teaching people bad habits. Diluting acrylic paints too heavily with just water causes the pigments to break up and give you a grainy finish. It did sound grumpy. But from you, it’s usual. And I disagree… It’s fine to use medium, but it’s difficult to use well. There’s a tutorial in it for sure, of course, but it’s for another day. Back in the day, we didn’t have any medium and we did just fine with water… In fact, I get excellent gradients without it. If you see a gradient that’s a little stepped here (just like a lot of my tutorials) it’s because I’m working very quickly and only teaching the basics of a technique. I’m not talking about gradients are stepping. I’m talking about that horrible graininess and those tide marks that you are in danger of getting when you stretch acrylic paint too thinly with water. Yes, back in the day we all just used water and we didn’t do just fine. We had grainy washes and tide marks 😛

Well, you first said my work looked “awful”. I think that’s pretty personal, and hardly pointed… I’m all for medium as an aid, as a tool, but that’s hardly what’s needed here… or what I was trying to teach. It’s another approach. I find using medium systematically is a bit sloppy, and I see that in some of your (on the whole great) work on figures… but I may be wrong. @elramozo I think we can agree to disagree on this one. I think we both need to lighten up and draw a line under any perceived insult. I totally apologise for any offense. I didn’t mean to call your work awful, that came out completely wrong. What I meant to say is that, in my experience, diluting paint to the point of transparency with nothing but water can lead to awful results if you don’t know what you’re doing. It’s the worst when you’re doing ultra fine detail work, and by the time you get your brush and hand stabilized, you find that the paint has dried on your brush! I love your videos Romain. I’ve grown so much as a painter with you by my side, lol. After painting crappy plastic minis for months as I trained and relearned basic techniques, I began painting the miniatures you have chosen along with you.
