Community Spotlight: 6mm American Civil War, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles & Tall Ships!
January 22, 2025 by crew
Come and join us for another delve into the Projects to find the best of the best from the last week or so. We'll be getting stuck into lots of great-looking miniature wargaming painting and hobbying this week...
...always let us know what YOU have been working on and share it across the site.
6mm American Civil War by elessar2590
We start off this week with a project that should start to shame Shay into finally getting around to his own 6mm American Civil War army. elessar2590 has been hard at work returning to an old project and getting sorted on their own army for Altar Of Freedom and the Battle Of Antietam.
What was quite interesting is that whilst the majority of the miniatures here were 6mm American Civil War, they were also taken from different factions as well in order to bulk out the 6mm army. There are Napoleonic miniatures and Franco-Prussian ones in here as well but they all work at this 6mm scale with the same paint scheme applied.
One of the surprises of the project was seeing the introduction of the USS Monitor. It might not even fit into the larger games that elessar2590 has planned but it's nice to have it as part of the collection to perhaps give some naval gun support.
Last, but not least we get a look at the larger collection and how it has all been coming together. I don't think you can tell at all that the miniatures have come from different theatres of war and periods. It's a slick and stylish looking army that does what it says on the tin.
Hopefully, we'll get to see some more from this project in the coming weeks and months as these armies begin to take to the battlefield to replay the American Civil War.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles by gorram
Next up, we're getting a bit Pulp with gorram and their first project for 2025 that focuses on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The idea is to start playing through the Pulp Alley fan supplement for these heroes in half-shells using a mixture of different miniatures from a variety of sources. The progress so far is good!
A bunch of the classic villains have been painted up and ready for action. The temptation would be to work on the turtles themselves but that could end up with you running the risk of feeling "done" once you've got them finished. I think going through the villains is a good first step as it will mean that you can treat yourself at the end with the heroes!
As well some some of the big villains, gorram has also worked on the Foot Clan who come with a mixture of different weapons. This should make them perfect for the skirmish games of Pulp Alley where you want to have distinct enemies to come up against.
The work on these is great and it's getting me feeling nostalgic for the classic cartoon and that theme tune. gorram is planning to play through the campaign solo and so isn't spoiling it for themselves but I can't wait to see how it develops in the project and how the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles look when they're done as well. The great idea for some sewer-style basing is also worth taking a look at.
Blood & Plunder Ships by hutch
Last but not least, hutch is going to be setting sail with a brand new project focused around a nautical voyage into the world of Blood & Plunder. The thrust of the project is to see whether or not hutch can get his kicks from working on a big table for Blood & Plunder considering that the open water doesn't tend to lend itself well to "terrain building".
With that in mind, hutch has been pondering and writing about exactly how they want to approach this project. The idea seems to be that we're going to be getting a rather nice sea with some cool islands, a pirate hideout, a cannibal island and perhaps some more. There will be a focus on smaller terrain pieces to help with modularity and it might also be a good way to future-proof for games of Port Royal.
With all of that being said, we thought we'd show off some of hutch's ships as part of this Community Spotlight. hutch has an excellent set of ships for use in Blood & Plunder that range from the small as you can see above through to some of the bigger ones below.
hutch has put a lot of effort into these ships and I like how they all ended up. The rigging looks great and the work on the sails and flags. There might have been some tips and tricks thanks to a Gerry Can video or two. Simple but effective.
Having these gorgeous ships make up part of this impressive collection and the final table will be excellent and they will be decent for working out the best way to set out the tabletop as well. Using all of these ships will allow for good placement of terrain and other elements like docks on the final build. I am intrigued to see where this all goes!
