Games Workshop are starting to bulk out the new range of War Of The Rohirrim miniatures for the Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game this weekend. Pre-orders will go up for a couple of Forge World resin sets as well as a bunch of plastic kits and returning older miniatures.

Hera The Bride Of Death - Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game

Hera, The Bride Of Death // Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game

Faced with tragedy during the War Of The Rohirrim, Hera takes on the mantle of The Bride Of Death, facing down the forces of Wulf atop the walls of the Hornburg. She can be given the shield that you see here or a rather battered and broken shield depending on which moment from the movie you want to represent.

As well as her, you can also get your hands on Shank & Wrot Orc Scavengers. Using the chaos caused by Wulf to their advantage, they are sneaking around and maybe pilfering a few choice pieces of jewellery for the Dark Lord.

They can also call on the hulking Snow Troll, summoning it to battle so they can scarper. Keeping it fed on Hill Tribesmen corpses probably stops it from eating them whole. It would be neat to play out the moment from the film between the Snow Troll and Helm as a smaller scenario.

Separate Plastic Releases

In addition to the new Forge World resin sets, you are also going to be able to buy the heroes and villains from the War Of The Rohirrim set separately now. Haleth & Hama, Princes Of Rohan are available to buy separately plus...

...you can also get Wulf & General Targg. This means that if you didn't want to buy the War Of The Rohirrim boxed set, you can just wait for these to come on pre-order and then use them alongside some of the other miniatures you have in your collection.

Having put together the new character miniatures, they are very nice. The infantry come in a lot more parts though and take a bit longer to assemble than they did back when the likes of the Rohirrim first launched in plastic! Scale-wise, the characters match up rather nicely to the older range but the standard infantry are a tiny bit bigger than the old plastics. Not so much that you'll notice when they're all on the tabletop together.

Returning Middle-earth Miniatures

In addition to the newer miniatures, a whole host of older metal and resin miniatures will also be coming back to the Middle-earth range.

Celeborn & Galadriel - Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game

For example, you'll be able to get the classic Celeborn & Galadriel set which features her mirror. A lovely set for collectors as well as those playing the miniatures game. You can also get some of The Hobbit range like Bard The Bowman.

Bard The Bowman // Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game

Fun fact, that version of Bard The Bowman with the Wind Lance is from an alternative take on the story where Bard used that rather than his son's shoulder to shoot Smaug. I like the way they went in the end as it's closer to the version of Bard in the book using his regular bow to take down Smaug. I really like the version of Bard on the right of the image above but annoyingly he'll probably be bundled in with the big dumb artillery piece.

Other re-releases will include Haldir and Thranduil, the Gondor Battlecry Trebuchet, Iron Hills Ballista and three sets of Commanders for Lorien, Minas Tirith and Rohan. It hasn't been mentioned which material these will come in as some (the Commanders) were turned into Finecast. I would hope they're classic metal!

On the Evil side of things you've also got the likes of The Goblin King from the original Hobbit Starter Set alongside his throne and few of his lackeys.

If you want to disturb the waters around Moria then you can also get The Watcher In The Water for your Fellowship-based campaigns.

You'll also be able to get the likes of Gorbag and Shagrat, the classic Cave Troll, the Trolls from The Hobbit, a Gundabad Orc Warband, Uruk-Hai Demolition Team, Isengard Assault Ballista, Mordor War Catapult and Morannon Orc and Mordor Orc Commanders. Again, no details on the materials used but it could be a mix of Forge World resin and metal.

Rohan Terrain

Last but not least, a bunch of Rohan terrain is also being sold in bundles and separately this weekend.

You'll be able to get the Rohan House and Watchtower & Palisades sets separately or you can get the Rohan Stronghold (above) which gives you six houses, two watchtowers and plenty of other gubbins for building Edoras during the War Of The Rohirrim or The Lord Of the Rings.

Whilst nice (and screen accurate) you can get a lot of good Dark Age terrain that would be suitable from the likes of Renedra and beyond at a fraction of the price. You have plenty of options!
