Old Favourites Get An Upgrade In Warlord’s Bolt Action 3rd Edition
December 19, 2024 by brennon
Warlord Games are previewing more of what awaits for their first Armies Of... book that will join the 3rd Edition of Bolt Action. Some old favourites are returning with a bit of a tweak to their profiles, so Warlord looks at how they've changed between editions.
2nd Edition Sturmtiger // Bolt Action
3rd Edition Sturmtiger // Bolt Action
First up, the team discussed the changes to the Sturmtiger. You've got a bit of a discount at Regular and you'll also note the L in the Period portion of the profile, explaining that the vehicle is typically found in Late War armies. The Sturmtiger has also earned the Slow Load special rule covering the way it would have worked on the battlefield. This has also contributed to its cost coming down. It's still a beast however and you won't want to get hit by that rocket mortar.
Light Mortar Fire
Sticking with the theme of mortars but moving away from the one mounted on the back of a vehicle, we also have a breakdown of how the Light Mortar has changed between editions.
1st Edition Light Mortar // Bolt Action
3rd Edition Light Mortar // Bolt Action
The Light Motar also got a points reduction and it now has the rule that it cannot fire smoke rounds (as it never would have been used to do so on the battlefield). The lower points cost means that you can slot it in nicely with your army. The Light Mortar also benefits from the Defend The Fatherland special rule if you take it for your Germans. This means that they can slot into Waffen-SS, Fallschirmjäger, or Gebirgsjäger themed forces.
Officer Updates
Last but not least, Officers have had a major update when it comes to Bolt Action 3rd Edition. As you can see, there are a lot more options to consider...
1st Edition Officer Team // Bolt Action
3rd Edition Officer Team // Bolt Action
The most major change is the fact that you can now take a larger squad with rules to match. You will also have to pay for your weapons so you won't be able to spam assault rifles like you did in the order editions. The Officer and their team can benefit from the Defend The Fatherland rules if you take them (as mentioned above) and you have lots of different ways to theme your force and make the German army you want to play.
Equally, Intelligence also adds a new twist to the mix for Bolt Action. This could potentially change the tide of battle and get you out of a scrape. Being able to control that first die drawn out of the bag makes a massive difference and feels thematic as a good general would be able to look at the lay of the land and act appropriately in the moment.
There are some neat changes coming for Bolt Action 3rd Edition and the Armies Of... books seem like a good way of further theming an army.
Are you going to be picking up the Armies Of Germany book?
