So my daughter just binged LotR Extended Edition on Sunday (again) and I would like to get her a set of “Frodo and friends”.
What options do I have aside from the official GW ones?
Copplestone Castings? They may be 10mm but why have just a gang when you could have an army!
It’s become kind of a tradition at my place to watch the Peter Jackson oeuvre – and possibly also the Ralph Bakshi ones – around this time of year, they provide additional inspiration for painting and army building and still hold up well despite their age, although I have to see them as something separate from the book.
As far as I’m concerned, THE definitve Middle Earth figures are made by Mithril in Ireland, they are the closest to what professor Tolkien probably had in mind when he wrote his stories and most closely match his sketches and descriptions.
Second in line might be Heritage, based on the Bakshi cartoon version, true 25 mm scale, so very small by today’s standards.
There is, of course, no shortage of miniatures obviously inspired by LotR – but not licensed by whoever owns the ‘legal rights’ at this time. Ral Partha made, imho, some of the best and most iconic Halflings and Elves of all time, Harlequin/Black Tree Design do some pretty good and rather chunky Halflings who would match Citadel figures very well in terms of looks and size.
If you want to do a REALLY deep dive into fantasy miniatures history, Minifigs made the very first Middle Earth figures: http://www.miniaturefigurines.co.uk/Catalogue.aspx?ScaleID=3&CategoryID=35&SubCategoryID=269
why?
If your daughter like the movies, why then go looking for figures that aren’t going to look like the movies?
Seems an odd approach.

Mainly because a) she’s “faceblind” like her mother. As long as the colours match all is well, b) because GW is bloody expensive and c) different scale would allow to make a small diorama that would actually fit in her room. (thanks to @nogbadthebad for that link and idea)
ha ha ok, all of that seems totally reasonable…
