    ### Start of shameless copy and paste ###

First time visitor to OTT? Then please introduce yourself in the New Member Thread and look around in the Project System. Then come back and read on…

    https://www.beastsofwar.com/forums/topic/introduce-yourselves-new-member-thread/

    https://www.beastsofwar.com/project/

Read all of this before you start as it will save you any trouble later.

First thing you must do is make your “pledge”. It can be anything gaming related, big or small, and you don’t even have to finish it. No, in here, happiness is the road. Have fun doing whatever it is, but it is not a race. Accompany your work with pictures or we might think you are do something sinister and just using us for cover.

You are also presented with a few questions. It is to get the conversation started. Try and keep your answers ‘conversational’, no text speak, and certainly no “basically”. This is how we all get to know each other better. While you are here feel free to tell us a story, show a picture, joke, tales of love or woe, or just add your own little bit. This is the whole point…in here it is just us.

If you have never taken part before we may bark and bite, but we also like a cuddle! It is all done in the best possible taste and it is character building. feel free to give as good as you get.

A few other things to note: NO RELIGION & NO POLITICS! Glasgow pub rules are in effect. If you need to make a better point then it is fine, but don’t take the piss. And always keep it civil. This includes no philosophy, no home computer culture wars.

Play plenty of music to go with your work. Loud and through proper speakers. Write us a playlist of things we might not have heard before.

Now, after all of that there is only one ‘real’ rule in here and it cannot be broken: NO DICKS! (Exceptions may be made for little fighting men with little plastic/resin/metal wieners)

And don’t forget the highlights of the weekend: The Weekender on Friday and XLBS on Sunday. And the little show that is the unofficial Hobby Hangout over at twitch.tv

    ### End of shameless copy and paste ###

    Question of the week:

    • Hobby heroes that have gone dark. Every one of us who has been into this hobby for more than 10 years has one or more hobby hero who has either stopped doing anything at all for any kind of reason, have died or (in some cases) gone in a completely different direction and are no longer doing stuff you enjoy watching. I’d like to hear some names of your hobby heroes.

And don’t forget the Secret Satan 2024 community thingy!

And now back to the show.

Pledge: be more mindful of the people around me.

    My answer:

There have been some Hobby Heroes that I enjoyed watching that then went on weird ways or content I didn’t like. One example is Black Magic Craft. At some point 3D stuff took over MDF and foam crafting and that’s when I left the channel. Mel has also been a “candidate” for this list. Not because I didn’t enjoy his content (far from it) but he had seemed to have lost his mojo and it all went south. (See his cry for help from a few days ago). And then there are those who where taken from us way before their time. TotalBiscuit being a prime example. I have yet to find someone who’s video game related content I enjoy as much as his.

Speaking of TB: his 1 minute 40k lore video is just bonkers great. Enjoy:

Pledge: don’t get massively inspired by all the awesome Samurai goodness and fall into the darkest pit of hobby insanity! Case in point, this 1:300 Castle Osaka model photo I took today… how does one NOT get fired up by this?!?
    IMG_8595

    My answer:

For me, the old GW Canada HQ people are the ones I have lost contact with, and would really like to know what they’re up to. It’s been forever since GW regressed into the Memphis HQ. So many good people were cast aside when they did it… I’ll randomly run into one every now and then. Which is cool. I don’t go to social media, so it’s kind of like 1950s random encounters …

Otherwise, there’s definitely a pall overall with some of the names and companies either passing on, or retiring – with no continuity… too many to list.

Anyway, off to see Kyoto at night. 🇯🇵

TotalBiscuit is the only one that comes to mind. Great reviews of games and good content. Such a shame cancer got to him.

Jim Sterling … , but I just lost interest in pc gaming in general to want to keep up with all the negativity.  I doubt his transition to female was a good idea, but the man made his choice and he always was a bit weird (to say the least).

I’ve been subscribed to so many youtubers, but only follow a few of them on a regular basis.

Part of the problem is how brutal the youtube algorithm is for content creators. If you don’t release a new video every week your channel disappears from view which results in less views for your videos and so on. The only ones that survive this appear to be the ones that have a more reliable source of income as sooner or later they will burn out.

YouTube really isn’t suited for someone who creates a library of good content. At some point there simply isn’t anything new to post, which really hurts the channel even though the overall content is timeless.

It’s weird to have to use YouTube to see anything related to the 80th year memorials for Market Garden … but that’s par for the course these days with our public tv channels.

Although I have been into wargaming and RPG’s for over 40 years… I’ve not been seeking advice on hobby via the likes of youtube until the last few years really… I just muddled through in my own way (and muddled is a good way to describe it)…

So I’m not familiar with any of the names mentioned above and don’t know any that have gone (for whatever reason).

I have a pledge this week… but it’s going to be long term pledge as I need to deal with some of the following…

    IMG_20240921_163433IMG_20240921_163417

Whether that means painting, or getting rid of… not sure yet.

There’s more stuff that needs dealing with… but I’m too lazy to get everything out and I think it would depress me to see the full extent of my pile of (shame/opportunity… delete as appropriate).

By thinking about how much work needs to go into that. Helps almost as much as the question “how much will that cost?” @grantinvanman

Oh I feel you so much. And I’m not even sure what hurts more: the money sank into projects that never happened? The time wasted hunting down? The dreams of glorious battles that never happened? Or just the sight of the unpainted plastic screaming “LAZY BASTARD” at one. Collecting stuff is and should be fun but when it leads to buyers remorse that is bad!

Saturday evening. Way to tired to setup the painting rack. Anything good on the telly?

If your TV anything like UK saturday nights… probably not.

UK Saturday is mostly reality shows, celebrity shows and quiz shows. The assumption being that people are out getting drunk and so they might as well put crap on the TV.

My average day I watch less than an hour of TV… that includes streaming channels…

And it’s absolutely lashing it down here. Thunder and lightning earlier.

The question was more rhetorical. We don’t have linear TV in this house since…. 10+ years? So if it’s not on the internet in any form I can’t watch it. Unless I buy a DVD/Bluray/VHS

    Thunder AND lightning?

to be honest beasts of War was the youtube channel that got me into this hobby.  Flames of War for the win series of videos were great entertainment.

The various vlogs showcasing table builds are great too.

@pagan8th looking at a big stack of things to do is always kind of depressing, because it is hard to see any progress.

Find a way to break it down into small tasks that can be completed in a week or month may be the better solution.

Heck … it’s something I need to do myself, because I keep getting distracted by new ideas.

It probably is why I haven’t finished moving into my house either. Even though I only have one big task left (paint the walls of the living room) I can’t get myself motivated enough to start for real.  Somehow there is always something that delays progress 😒

@pagan8th I think the last time I had TV in the sense you refer to was about a decade ago. All streaming now. No more commercials. Watch what I want. When I want. Don’t know why anyone would cling to the old way of TV.

    @sundancer – cost wouldn’t be the issue, it’s starting ANOTHER project …

On the plus side, I found some cool purple 2024 gravel tires for one of my bikes at a Kyoto shop last night.

Streaming has it’s problems. The sheer amount of stuff available makes it tricky to find anything and 99% of it is garbage.

I used to have the basic netflix package, but they removed that option and gave me a choice of £10.99 a month to watch without adverts or £4.99 with some ads. Given I watch it every few days unless something amazing shows up… and that’s rare… it would be a waste to spend the extra £6 a month.

Too many platforms. No way I’m paying for more than one. Paramount is really limited in choice. Prime is likewise. Disney series for Marvel and Star Wars have been utter crap in recent times. I switch to a different streamer at some point, or cancel it completely and spend the money on something else.

    I have:

Apple – their shows are pretty spectacular, and I think underrated

Netflix – . One cool thing is I’m in Japan, and my Netflix is available on the hotel TV  for those times when we’re just hanging out.

Prime – which has HBO/Crave; now has NHL for hockey in winter, or I’ll get Sportsnet , haven’t decided yet, but I will get NHL somewhere

Disney – more than Disney, I enjoy what’s on it.

No TV. No commercials. Between my partner and I , that’s all our watching needs.

I don’t watch YouTube, or on my phone/ipad/computer.

I only have Disney+ (Futurama, Family Guy, American Dad) and Prime (Doctor Who).
Prime is annoying in the way it tries to tempt you into watching any of the content that isn’t even included in the subscription so every time I want to watch something I need to be careful I’m not accidentally renting stuff.

I also have Audible as listening to audio books is a lot of fun when the narration is done well.

Such a shame that we can’t have one streaming service do all the shows/series/movies. It is too expensive to watch everything I want, so I don’t.

otoh … this gives me more potential hobby time as I can’t watch tv and do hobby at the same time anyway.

I need to re-review my cable subscription, because I really haven’t been watching any linear tv for years. Only downside is that it is linked to my internet-subscription so I’m not sure I’d be saving any money by cancelling that part. otoh I did downgrade the tv subscription a while ago.

UK have you need a licence for the ‘free BBC’ and that’s the equivalent of one annual subscription.

Last series of dr poo was awful… stopped watching it. Current dr is terrible.

Edit: To add to the pile I may have bought another 15 minis from Etsy and 4 more from Crooked Dice, plus a vehicle… own worst enemy… but I do need (most) of these for the current RPG, or a forthcoming campaign (taking place after the next TPK… which could be tonight if they’re not careful…)

These I have no immediate need for… but I just had to…

This week’s pledge is to finish the Alice in Wonderland diorama – making good progress so far.

I only started paying attention to who people are in the industry in the past couple of years, so no big changes in that time pop to mind.
