My introduction to wargaming was actually with Mutant Chronicles: Warzone.
I first tried 40k in 4th edition, had a small Tau army, ended up selling it because I moved to a little town with no wadgaming scene. After moving back to my hometown I got back into wargaming, and dipped my toes into both Fantasy and 40K, this was around 2008 or so. At the same time I was playing AT-43, Warmachine, dabbling in Infinity and stuff like Firestorm Armada and OG Dystopian Wars.
I played a few games of 40K again, trying both Chaos and Guard and realized something: I hated the ruleset. I had been spoiled by games like AT-43 with alternating activations and no phase system and I knew there was no going back. I tried playing Flames of War for years because it has a big local scene here in SLC, but eventually realized I wasn’t having fun because it was so much like those old GW systems and I didn’t enjoy it.
I’ve since moved on to stuff like One Page Rules, Heavy Gear, Battletech (which yes has phases, I know) and various skirmish games.
If I ever want to play in the wolrs of 40K, which I don’t because I just don’t get the appeal, I’d just play Epic. At least that had a decent ruleset.
