Atomic Mass Games Refreshing Star Wars: Legion Rules
July 19, 2024 by brennon
Atomic Mass Games this week talked in-depth about refreshing Star Wars: Legion, their 28mm scale Sci-Fi game set in the Star Wars universe. The rules are getting quite an overhaul and Atomic Mass Games talked about this at length in a new article on their website.
Star Wars: Legion // Atomic Mass Games
Atomic Mass Games talked at length in their update about addressing the complexity of the rules, the way that units work and their uniqueness on the battlefield. They are also addressing the role different units play on the battlefield and how scenarios and missions have been changed.
The article goes into way more depth than I can discuss here but it explores the expanding size of units, changes to cover, updates on the role of characters to make them feel more heroic and a redress of the balance when it comes to the method in which you dive into your missions.
This also comes with a big update on the rules resources for Star Wars: Legion which can be found below...

Check out the updates and then let us know in the comments what you think about the plans from Atomic Mass Games. It also looks like we might be getting some new miniatures in the near future!

It still aten’t dead then.
Granny Weatherwax clutches that note to her chest and so does Legion.
There’s time yet…
Disingenuous of them to insist on saying “It’s not a new edition” when they’ve changed everything about the game
D&D is not releasing a new edition either, despite changing a huge amount.
If it looks like a new edition, walks like a new edition, quacks like a new edition…
And that’s a lot of pdfs to download and print.
A game that could and should have had mass appeal but got bogged down in complexity and hijacked by the competitive play mob.
I long ago gave up on “the game” – I only have the miniatures left. They’re fun to paint and collect. I’ve never even played one game with them. Can’t see that changing.
Pretty much the same for me. I have explored using Spectre Operations for some small gritty fire fights and it worked well.
How’s that work? Does it need any changes in the rules?
It doesn’t need much in the way of changes. I have a couple of squads of imperials and rebels. Spectre Operations works really well for regular vs irregular forces. Weapons correlate well (Stormtrooper E11 blaster works as a CQB Carbine for example). Rebels are mostly militia types, with commandos and Pathfinders being Elites. Stormtroopers were professionals with heavy body armor. Death troopers played as Elites. For vehicles I have Scout Troopers on speeder bikes which I treated as motorcycles that aren’t effected by terrain. I have a rebel ATRT. I treated it as an uparmored technical with a heavy machine… Read more »
well that’s me sold
How does one give up on a game without having ever played it?
You take the minis, and get rid of the rest. If the game held no interest for me, why would I waste my time with it? Lots of better things to do.
I wouldn’t force myself to eat a peanut butter and jam sandwich if I thought the smell revolting, would I? Nope.
surely there’s a new starter set coming that has all these changes, right ?
then again … the original starter sets didn’t have a massive rulebook.
Not sure if the game can survive an update like this.
They need more marketing to make it active again I’d say.
If only the new star wars movies hadn’t wrecked the franchise.
@limburger so just to be clear when you say:
“ If only the new star wars movies hadn’t wrecked the franchise”
You don’t like the new movies? ?
Yup, since (and including) Phantom Menace, every movie except Rogue One has wrecked the franchise.
That’s quite the statement, or opinion.
It’s the entertainment equivalent of saying cake is delicious.
Making huge, sweeping, changes, keep all the pointless proprietary crap that adds nothing of value. Might as well go big and get the game to a point where you don’t need to buy a bunch of extra nonsense just to play it.
Seriously, is there any reason aside from “lolAsmodee” that this game can’t just use a regular tape measure and dice?
It’s good to see that AMG are putting serious resource into this game. All the changes they have spoken about sound positive and it’s reassuring to see a two year roadmap. Long live legion.
I have a bad feeling about this
Just in general. X-Wing fell of the wagon after 2.0
That’s when I dropped out. FFG and now Asmodee sure know how to kill games. I was looking at getting into Legion for the clone wars a month ago and was almost in when I remembered that. Didn’t want to be pissed off while rebasing clones and shelling out a lot of money for cheap cardboard.
So I’m skimming the PDFs and watching the videos…. this is a completely different game but in name. Is there anything left in there that is still remotely recognisable as Legion? Dice, bases and movement & range tools. That’s it. Art, turn orders, setup, mission… flock. I’m really unsure if I’m willing to make that jump.
Unless you play competitively you don’t have to change.
If it aint broke, don’t fix it.
True. But that comes with it own set of problems. New units will not fit in the old system for obvious reasons. I’ll be limited to play with one or two persons that also do not want to change rule settings. It’s a lose – lose for me currently. Extra annoying: the new cards are all the same size so all my 14-pocket A5 binder pages don’t work any more for unit construction. *sigh*
The issue with construction for the card redisgn being frustrating was pretty much what Youtuber Crabbock has said too.
Folks in Crabbock chat started pinging in about Xenos Rampant and One Page Rules, impressions are its the spawn/lovechild of its parents, 40K and Legion 1.0
I suspect that a lot of the core characters and units will never roll a legion dice in anger but be pressganged into an alternate system like those mentioned above, one of the 40K SW codex variants or the original Star Wars Battles available from D6 Holocron for free
And on top of all I really struggle lately with English rulebooks. It feels like my brain is either loosing it’s understanding of the language or I never had it and now my brain is admitting defeat. I’ll wait for the German version of the rules for final judgement. Word in the Facepage Groups is “they are close”.
Not holding my breath though
FFG really got off on the wrong foot with a game that should have been extremely cinematic and heavily character based. Especially given it’s build off of Dust Warfare, a game which had no problem with either of these things. It always has felt very awkward as a design.
Love the hard plastic models, and I’ve enjoyed playing the game at organised events. Some of the rules definitely have room to be streamlined, and there’s a lot of units that a comprehensive rebalance is probably due that needs more than points tweaks. Glad to see AMG are giving the game the attention it deserves to continue thriving, rather than leaving it to fade. If your reasons for giving up the game (or never playing it at all) are the size of the cards, or the shape of the dice, I don’t think you’re the customers they need to look… Read more »
If they made the game with seven sided dice I would play it. Also the cards would have to be 20cm square. That is all I ask for.
We don’t want rules updates we want the firesale! Is this yet another attempt at forcing people to rebuy a load of expensive card?
The game has long since passed my interest, the minis though I do still like and appreciate, perfect for a whole host of other games.
@jamescutts TRUTH! Cheap minis now! No more cards!
