A Message From Battlefront! Open Fire Reboot Coming in April
February 26, 2015 by stvitusdancern
There is some incredible news from our friends from New Zealand. Battlefront is doing a reboot of the Flames of War Open Fire Starter Set. In a teaser video that was posted last evening the new set will have some changes to it.
These will include all plastics for armour and a 20 page quick start rulebook and a all new "Forces" book to expand beyond the German and British lists to include Russians and Americans. Not much else was posted in the very short video, I wonder what the price point will be on this set?
I did not think the last set was that expensive compared to other starter sets. It will be interesting to see what the actual differences will be from the new set from the last edition. As soon as we get our hands on one we will write up a review and let you all know.
Do you think a new starter set will recruit more players?
Gonna keep an eye on that! I’ve been itching for some WW2 gaming for the past few years!
i bought two of these sets last summer to get into Flames of War is a brilliant set, and two boxes gave enough forces to do a decent sized game. Cant fit everything from two sets into the forces, but can still create a decent sized forces for both sides to get a good game in, without too much stuff left over although i would warn that the mini rulebook is poor quality, both of the rulebook had pages flying out (in some cases quite literally) within minutes of first being use. Ive actually ended up ripping out all the… Read more »
Most importantly, the new set seems to contain new plastic models of the Sherman V’s, Fireflies and StuG G’s, which is great news; the original minis weren’t too good, to be honest, but they were Battlefront’s first venture into plastic tanks, and they have learnt a lot since then. For that reason alone this was an obvious move.
I think we are losing the rulebook altogether. Not good.
What makes you think “We are losing the rulebook?”
I thinking what grumbleback is getting at is, that in the last starter you received the full rules but in the mini A5-ish format (admittedly the binding was rubbish and the thing would fall apart after a few uses). You also received a 52 page QuickStart rule book.
In this set they haven’t mentioned the full rules only a ’20 page QuickStart rulebook’. That doesn’t mean the full rules will not be included but it’s a possibility as they haven’t spoken about it.
I think they are being quite smart with this, open fire is becoming a quite self contained mini version of FOW. This is the start of expanding it’s reach beyond the established gaming market.
No need for complexity here. KISS
“As a clarification, the rules included in this starter set are a streamlined set of rules, perfect for new players and those veterans looking for a more casual game.
More info on this will be coming in the next few weeks when we release our design notes video.”
This was posted from FOW on youtube concerning the rulebook changes.
What the hell was that on the guys head?
That has to be our escaped electricity generating hamster!!!!!!
Power cut explained! 😉
Sush ush ush ush, here boy, ush ush ush 😉
I think it’s too late Warren, that thing looked dead to me!
Is it just me or could there have been an itzy bit more enthusiasm in the video, they didn’t exactly get me on the edge of my seat……
Ok so it is different plastics and a cut down rule set… but still Germans and British right? Maybe it’s time for a change as Achtung! (precursor to Open Fire) was Stugs and Shermans as well. How about Panthers and T34s? Panzer IVs and Cromwells? Mix it up a bit fellas.
The mad hairdo was the highlight for me. I want that sculpted as a FOW objective 🙂
Yep the mini rule book was a problem in the old set but not sure the new set offers much I’d consider picking it up again for. Lots of other 15mm miniatures (Plastic Soldier Company) so was hoping for maybe some Panzers rather then Stuggs.
Battlefront is dead to me.
I love my original open fire set. My step dad is looking at jumping into FOW so if this is any good ill get him this as gift.
