Since most of the companies in our hobby are relying a great deal on Facepage/META for their social media stuff and also their communities (at least that’s how it feels) I was wondering:

What would happen if facepage just stopped working. Would forums get a second life? Would the users all flock to discord for the next single-point-of-failure? Would something new emerge?

My guess is: currently Discord would be the place to go. And maybe some sites like OTT would benefit from an outage of facepage.

    What’s your guess on this?

That would be awesome; I stopped using social media years ago. It’s not “social” in any way. Instagram, awful. Never tried others.

Noticeable improvement in overall life joy as a result. They all take too much work.

If facecrook ceased to exist I’d think… “that’s a start… next target twatter”

the book of faesces going kaputt ?
that would be a blessing for all mankind.

it probably would be the only thing to ever convince its current users to move to a different platform.

The bigger problem is that such a platform would inevitably be a clone and not much would change (if you’ve ever visited Reddit you’ll understand … ss dp)

Discord is for messaging. It won’t ever be close to classic forums.

And as for OTT … if there ever was a mass invasion of the kind of folks addicted to the book of faesces the community feeling would be gone in an instant. That is assuming the servers don’t melt down first …

It’d be hard to find out who’s died. I quit FB for a good few years but folks had to make some effort to let me know who’s popped their clogs.

I’m back now, not engaging much outside my actual friends and it’s bearable. Very bearable indeed.

I never really got into facebook. Truth be told only I signed up about a year ago because it was used by a local gaming group to arrange weekly games. Mainly because I am not really very social. I have never had any great need to share what I am doing, or taking picture of food I have eaten to share.

That said I have to come see that they are a useful place for people to share information but do find facebook lacking in debate.

I do think that discord has started to replace facebook. The local gaming group has moved to it. I do think they are great social tools for the hobby space. I use them to arrange games, get advice on painting, share the hobby with people, I get to ask the local stores about the products.

In terms of OTT I have some what puzzled why it is not so popular. I look back sometimes at older postings and see a lot of different names, and certainly older postings had more people replying. Given how popular reddit is these days we cannot say the concept of a posting board is dead. Certainly the hobby is no less popular.

Is it because the way information is consumed has changed ? Do we get the hobby news more from youtube videos than written sites ? Why dont I post that often ? Is it because of the lack of interaction ? I am not sure but I do feel things change more post covid.

Looking back to the site stuff pre-covid it seems night and day compared to now. I dont know why it feels like that.

When I had an Instagram, I took photos of dumpsters. Nothing but. All with an iPhone, and turned into black and white, all arty and crap.  It was a commentary on the state of Instagram. Oddly, my account had a weird cult like following, and eventually I started really taking it to Instagram – I took photos of dumpsters from TV, movies, not even real ones. Then I got bored of it, and just shut it down.

Hahaha. People will have thought it meant something, and would have subscribed like lemmings, but it’s just dumpsters. That in itself probably means something… 🤔

@redscope I’d say it’s much the same across any community out there on the internet.
Most tend to have more lurkers than active participants. And it’s usually the same names that tend to be the most active.

I’d also say that this hobby by its very nature is off-line. Except for the event (stay indoors! ™) there was no reason to have an online presence. That kind of makes it difficult to attract a large persistent community.

I also can’t help but mention that the speed of this website is not always helping even when just browsing the forums or projects, which sucks as the concept is magnificent.

Facebook being shut down would be great.

Then gaming companies would have to set up real websites instead of cheating out and using FB.  Gamers could get the info they need without unwanted advertising.   I’m good with advertising that is gaming related but I don’t want the other crap.  I’ve not have FB for what feels like a decade (not sure the exact time I’ve been off there.

Good riddance if it ever goes the way of ,’MySpace’.

This is especially funny as there have some site going BOOM in the past few days XD

    https://www.karwansaraypublishers.com/blogs/wss-blog/server-down-websites-out

clarification: why this is funny: it’s basically what I proposed but on a small scale. Because all the sites mentioned in the article are being run by one (1) person. You can’t get more “single point of failure” than that. And Facepage is a spof!

    Back to the coffee

Someone told me a guy was hosting those sites from a home server that lived in his closet.  Also that he was on vacation currently and was in no hurry to get things fixed up.

I have no idea if any of that is true.

If so, it’s a case of you get what you pay for?

    I don’t know….but I do hope those sites get going again.  🙂🤞

TwoFatLardies did post this on their facepage:

Righty ho. Well, I am not really sure where to begin, but let’s give it a go.
The TooFatLardies website is likely to be down for two weeks. And when it reappears, I’ll be in the US for Historicon. Now, there’s a double whammy.
To provide a bit of context, we, along with several other wargaming companies, use the services of the man I always refer to as the web elf. It’s great to deal with him and he’s a wargamer and consequently it makes life really easy when we release products and he understands exactly what we are doing. He’s also a bloke who goes the extra mile and often works round the clock to make sure things are running as well as they can.
HOWEVER, he’s just had a catastrophic failure of the server he keeps everything on and all the web sites he manages are kaputt, for now. That probably isn’t what has actually happened, as there is all sorts of technical reasons this stuff kicks off, and it’s all beyond me.
HOWEVER (yes, another HOWEVER!) its his 60th birthday tomorrow and his wife has booked a cruise. They leave in the morning. So, that means that until, he returns, nobody can access our web site and, as it is likely it will have to be rebuilt from scratch, which rather compounds the issue.
Now, there are moments in life which test one’s patience and, frankly, this is one. But the reality is that I could jump up and down and scream and shout all I want, but it won’t change a thing. What’s more, the poor bloke has got to go on holiday and look like he’s enjoying it. So, with that in mind, I have told him to have a great holiday and not to worry about it until he returns.
It’s obviously a huge blow for us as our cash flow is now completely shut off. It’s equally frustrating that the business email doesn’t work and if you ordered in the last 36 hours we can’t process that. Sadly, I am not here providing any solutions, just informing you of the issue we currently have. I do hope that you can all bear with us until we can get this resolved.

    and later:

A short update tonight. We’ve been advised of the following:
“Unfortunately at this stage you must assume the worse and that your website is unrecoverable!”
That is a worst case scenario, but I am not sure what the best case is! We are now working with a company who are getting our email back working. Sadly, we won’t be able to access any old messages, but we will at leats have a line of comms we can all use.
By tomorrow, anyone going to the web site will see a temporary page explaining what has happened and that we are working to resolve the issue. At present the time involved is uncertain, we just need to await the return of the web chap and see what he can do. I am not sure if mirror versions exist of the site, I do hope so, but hope is a thin diet.
Once we get the email up and running we can then see where we are with regards selling stuff.

too funny. Some old “elf” had it all in his basement, and now it’s over.

    Wow.

Oh wow. I think that’s the same issue that did for the Hasslefree web store.

Oops yes, dude off on a cruise. Yeah that’s the one.
