Part 1 is done!
Added some vines coming down the trees. Not convinced about the look, but at least it adds some nice light contrast.
Some updates
It’s not finished, but it looks a lot better with done colors!
Priming stage
For extra texture, I tried applying a bit of green stuff or clay, than using actual branches or tree bark to imprint some realistic texture.
It was not a great success ?. The greenstuff was too stiff. The cheap dollar store clay worked a little bit better.
More trees..
Gluing a bit of cork and some trees to the base.
Just working on two bases for now as prototype.
Added some real (disinfected) branches to the base.
I wanted to add more, but I realize it was becoming an issue to remove the trees in the middle.
Not gluing those yet as I think it would make painting/drybrushing the base a nightmare.
Covering the wire frame
I added two layers of (cheap) drywall compound to cover the frame.
I am making weird creepy trees growing in a corrupted forest, so to make them more visually interesting and more interesting for painting, I added three different kinds of texture over the trees in random pattern:
– baking soda (subtle texture)
– fine sand
– tike grout
Twisting some wire
I made about 20 trees out of twisting wire. It is a bit time consuming, but after a while, it is sort of a relaxing task ?♂️
I used different types of wire:
– florist wire (didn’t like them so much..)
– different size of cheap metal wire I had laying around
– craft/beading wire (easy to bend and super cheap)
For the base, I cut some mdf board from the dollar store.
My plan is to have some of the trees glued onto the mdf base with a proper woodland scenery, but also to have some of trees on small circular bases so they can be removed.
I glued some small magnetic sheet onto the base. The removable trees will have a small magnet.
My old trees
I made these trees about 15 years, but now it’s time to retire them.
They were simple wire trees wrapped with paper and glue.
Over the years, they lost most of their foliage.
For gaming, we used them on green cardstock of various sizes. It was convenient to vary the size of terrain without making too many trees.
Also, it was a very clear boundary to determine whether a unit was within or not the terrain piece.
We could also remove the trees when units were inside the wood.

Crafted these trees about 15 years ago. Simple wire trees wrapped with glue and paper.
For gaming, we used various sizes of cardstock to represent the base of the forest terrain. It was also convenient to remove the trees to place units on the wood.
The only issue is that it doesn’t look too good…
They had minimal foliage to begin with, so after many years and multiple moving in boxes they lost most foliage..
