This is my first squad of Levy for SAGA. After giving up on Saxons I liked the look of the Pagan Rus. With each new project there is usually something I want to achieve or experiment with. This time I wanted to make harsh winter bases suitble for that area of the Baltics.

The minis are the metals from Gripping Beast. It’s an odd notion but I like to have chunky metals for historical miniatures, the further back in the time scale the more metal minis. So my WWII Brits are metal and plastic and Medieval and older tend to be all metal. I’d love to get my hands on Front Ranks WoTR minis.

I painted these using Vallejo, again another notion is I use Citadel paints for GW minis and Vallejo for historics…. I’ve issues I know.

I picked out a mix of earthy and brighter primary colours for the cloth and wanted to have a good mix of brunette, blonde, black and ginger hair for the horde.

For basing I used the magnetic 2p coins which spent a couple days in Coke to get the grim of them. PVA glue and sand formed the base and was primed with Mechanicus Standard Grey, washed in Nuln Oild and highlighted with a grey drybrush. I then created the snowy base using the above Snow and tuftsFor basing I used the magnetic 2p coins which spent a couple days in Coke to get the grim of them. With the base dried I painted the rim in green. Levy units have a green rimmed base, Warriors blue rim, Elite red rim, the General purple and characters yellow rims. It's a nice visual aid and I also forget which units are supposed to which. With the base dried I painted the rim in green.
