Settlers of Catan Heads to the Big Screen!

With everything from Ouija boards to Battleship getting turned into movies, it was only a matter of time before cinema's attention turned to one of the world's most popular board games. Now it looks like Settlers of Catan is heading to the big screen.
In Settlers of Catan, players compete to build their settlements across this new land, struggling for resources as their societies expand. The game has been exceptionally successful, selling over 22 million copies world wide, its simple strategic gameplay making it highly appealing to both long standing and casual gamers. Sounds like the perfect basis for a movie!
According to Deadline, the film rights to the franchise have been acquired by Gail Katz, the producer behind the Harrison Ford film Air Force One. She was apparently introduced to the game by her college-aged kids and has been wanting to see an adaptation ever since.
Now, while Settlers of Catan is rather sparse when it comes to plot, it does have a strong basis and setting which could lead to an interesting story. The conflicts and struggles of a settlement trying to establish itself is one which could be interesting to explore. Personally, I believe this could work as long as the island of Catan itself feels like a character and there is a strong focus on the settlement as a whole. There should be a focus on communal identity as the settlements try to deal with each other over the resource.
Also, somebody must ask if anyone has wood for sheep.

Does hollywood also believe we are waiting for “Uno: The Movie”? There is zero point to paying for this IP just to make an island settler movie. Now people are going to have to endure an explanation of why roads have to be built in a hexagon. Or why resources can only be collected with the random roll of a D6.
Can’t wait for Dominos the movie, the tag line could be “Watch them fall – this august!”. Or perhaps Jenga where giants keep taking out lumps of a building while it’s victims are still inside it. Oops, I’m probably giving Hollywood ideas! Sorry!

I’ve been curious about this game for a while, as a family thing, not necessarily a wargame. What’s game play like? Is it something the family could learn quickly and spend an evening playing?
this is a great family game most can pick it up quickly. My 8 year old daughter played her first game over the holidays and she took to it well with help.
