Community Spotlight: Moon Battles, Steel Rifts & An Undead Army
April 17, 2024 by brennon
Come and join us for another delve into the Projects to find the best of the best from the last week or so. We're going to be getting stuck into lots of great-looking miniature wargaming painting and hobbying this week...
...make sure to always let us know what YOU have been working on and share it across the site.
Lunar Starter Set by wmcduff
We start this week with a look at what wmcduff has been doing when it comes to the world of Lunar. This moon-based miniatures game has some fun figures for you to work on and I think that wmcduff has been doing a great job bringing the two sides from the Starter Set to life.
It's quite hard to get white looking good on miniatures and so when you're tasked with doing that across a set like this, it can probably be quite daunting. I think that wmcduff has done a superb job here, using the grey and off-white to add some depths to the scheme before finishing it off with a drybrush. The spots of red and blue then really help to draw the eye and break up the schemes.
This then contrasts really nicely with the red used to represent the Russians. I really like the protective layer added to the visor of the Russian which again helps to create a point of difference between the two sides. The proper, grey lunar bases also work nicely and I like that they are all scuffed up and rough. It gives the impression of a proper scuffle going on.
I also really like the transport solution for these Lunar miniatures.
That is a good use of magnets and well-placed miniatures. Skirmish games only need a handful of miniatures and so slotting them into smaller containers like this is a perfect way of shipping them around. I hope that we get to see some terrain and perhaps even some games of Lunar being played out as part of this project.
Steel Rift by marine101
Next up, we have a look at some of the work by marine101 who has been challenged with getting Steel Rift ready to be played by his son before he returns to school. This seems like a great challenge and we've already seen some awesome walkers coming to life for this project alongside some terrain too.
Steel Rift comes from the folks at Death Ray Designs and I have to say, the two factions that have been painted up here look awesome. It's even more impressive considering that marine101 doesn't even really care that much for mechs! The Authority and the Freelancers have come together really well and I love the blocky "cartoon" look to the miniatures.
You're not going to be wondering which side is which when these take to the tabletop. There is a great breakdown of how all of these miniatures were painted up so if you're looking to replicate this, you have a great guide here. There's nothing to get you excited about a new game like fully painted miniatures ready for the tabletop.
Now all of the miniatures are assembled and the basing is done, the terrain is next up for marine101. I hope that we're going to see a finished battlefield before long that will then lead to some fun gaming with the gift-giving son. I would love to see some action shots of these miniatures amid battle.
Undead Army by firelock22 (Lily)
Last but not least, we've got a little Otter Pup having a pop at doing some painting. firelock22's little one, Lily, wanted to join in the painting and has been working on some shambling Skeletons for Fantasy wargames. Lily asked for a big army of skeletons and the answer was yes, but only if you paint them!
Lily then dived into the process of painting these miniatures up after the swordsmen here were assembled by Dad. The colour choices are spot on and I like the way that the armour and weapons have been done as well as the basic skeleton fellows. There is even a purple one at the back which is going to be a theme amongst the army.
Hopefully, this is just the start from Lily and we're going to be seeing a BIG army popping up over the next while. I would love to see some of the magical fellows who animate these legions. Could we see a big purple necromancer or perhaps a vampire popping up?
What Are You Painting Right Now?
Every week we’re absolutely blown away by the incredible topics that are put into the Projects, it’s getting more difficult to choose Community Spotlights! We love your work and we hope to see a lot more of it in the future!
If you fancy getting your hobby fingers out and showing off your newest paint job, terrain piece or even greatest gaming achievement, we want to know about it! We don’t mind if you’re a newcomer to painting or a veteran of the brush, everything you do inspires us to create more and more content together!
What do you think of the entries this week?

I know that meme in the first picture.
Some very nice projects there, particularly those undead. They were one of my first sets of miniatures back in the day and an excellent way to get started in the hobby.
Oathmark skellies are a great set, im sure we will end up with another box at some point!
I’m absolutely loving each and everyone of these sets, but I am particularly impressed by Lily’s skeletons! The paintjob is superb and I love the addition of the purple one. This really inspires me to get my eldest (4.5 years oldest) to sit down with me sometime and try and paint something.
Thank you! Archers next as she has finished some spearmen since then.. the Undead horde is rising! Def recommend something like this for quick, pleasing results that give them something to build on and ‘aim for next’!
