Games Workshop announced the new edition of Warhammer Age Of Sigmar proper this week as part of their Adepticon reveals. We didn't get any miniature reveals but we did get a brand new animated trailer showcasing the situation as it stands in The Mortal Realms.

The trailer followed the final moments of a warrior from The Mortal Realms who has their soul stolen from the clutches of Nagash and thrust into the immortal legions of Sigmar and the Stormcast Eternals. The "lie" that we were teased about wasn't quite as big of a thing as Games Workshop made out. We knew the Stormcast Eternals lost portions of their souls and slowly changed with each reforging. Maybe they'll make more of a thing about it in the unfolding storyline but we'll have to see.

The trailer also gave us a look at some brand new "miniatures" that we'll be getting. We didn't actually see the plastic but the various units, monsters and characters in the trailer give us an indication as to what's coming. It looks like we've got revamped Liberators and Prosecutors for the Stormcast Eternals alongside some new characters that will no doubt be in the main starter set for the game.

On the Skaven side, we're getting revamped Rat Ogors, new character miniatures and all manner of fascinating contraptions that take classic weapons and turn them up a notch. As was mentioned during the stream, the Ratling Gun has had a bit of an upgrade for example.

Lore-wise, we also got to see the rise of Blight City. The Skaven have smashed the city into the Realm Of Fire and they look to be the new big bad for this edition of Warhammer Age Of Sigmar. It has also been noted that The Great Horned Rat has now taken his place amongst the pantheon of Chaos Gods which folks aren't too happy about.

A Shift In Game Mechanics

As well as the move in the narrative, Games Workshop also revealed that this is going to be a big overhaul of the rules for Warhammer Age Of Sigmar. To start with, because the core rules are going to be changed so much the old Battletomes won't be of use. So, much like with 10th Edition Warhammer 40,000, we're instead going to be getting something of an "Index" edition.

Spearhead - Warhammer Age Of Sigmar

Spearhead // Warhammer Age Of Sigmar

As with Warhammer 40,000 though, the new edition will bring free downloadable "faction packs" at launch. They will contain everything that you need to play including battle traits, subfactions, enhancements, spell lores and warscrolls for every unit in the game. That includes new units revealed as part of the Dawnbringers Crusade.

Games Workshop touted words similar to the "simple but not simplified" speak that we heard round the launch of 10th Edition Warhammer 40,000 so it will be interesting to see what they've done with the mechanics. The double turn is staying thoug which made a lot of folks very happy.

You'll also have noted the Spearhead image above. This gamemode has been designed to deliver balanced beginner-friendly armies for Warhammer Age Of Sigmar (a bit like Combat Patrol. I think they stole someone's homework) that you can play right out of the box.

It uses the core rules but with a modular twist. Spearhead is designed to be played in around an hour and gives you the chance to try out a smaller skirmish force before diving into something bigger. It was intriguing to hear about the way some Spearheads work and how they are balanced. For example, Yndrasta might be key to her new boxed set but she won't show up right away, meaning you'll get a cinematic moment in gameplay but have to defend hard before hand.

It also seems like Spearhead (and Age Of Sigmar more widely) is going to be making use of those shifting objectives from the current edition with perhaps a note of chance taken from 10th Edition Warhammer 40,000 and the mission decks. We shall see how it all comes together.

I am intrigued to see what they do with the new edition. I have been enjoying the current one and it seems like it all "works". So, it seems odd to change it all but then again, the wheel keeps turning...

Dawnbringers Crusade - One More Thing...

Whilst the new edition might be coming soon, some new releases are coming to finish off the Dawnbringers Crusade.

Abraxia, Spear Of The Everchosen (Details) // Warhammer Age Of Sigmar

Abraxia, Spear of the Everchosen is a brand new character for the forces of Chaos. She is one of the mightiest amongst the Everchosen who are all powerful warriors in their own right. She is first amongst Archaon’s Eight Circles of Varanguard and as a challenge to her, Archaon gifted her the mighty Gorbolga the Accurs’d. This spear is almost as dangerous to the wielder as it is to her foes and can mutate those that it touches, turning them into maddened servants of Chaos.

She comes at the head of a new set, Abraxia's Varanspear. This set features a band of the brutal Varanguard for you to use when hunting down worthy foes that would please the Everchosen.

Her rules will be available free to download online but also as part of the Dawnbringers book, Hounds Of Chaos.

Hounds of Chaos - Warhammer Age Of Sigmar

Hounds Of Chaos // Warhammer Age Of Sigmar

Hound Of Chaos mentions the monstrous new plans of Chaos to send The Mortal Realms into ruin and follows some famous faces as they battle once again over old rivalries. It also contends with the appearance of these strange and very heavy metal that are appearing all over the place.

Something strange is going on when it comes to the leylines of The Mortal Realms and it might have something to do with the upcoming edition of the game and a bit of a change in the state of play.

Will you be checking out the new edition of Warhammer Age Of Sigmar?
