Just like with almost all book series, movie franchises or most anything else, the original is usually the best.

Failing that, older versions almost always trump newer ones.

Case in point – since I happen to have them in front of me right now: The 5th edition WHFB High Elf army book from 1997 has 114 pages of background, stories, lore, rules, lots of gorgeous color photographs and paintings plus many black&white ones, maps and even a timeline of Elven history and Phoenix Kings.

The WHTOW (read: 9th ed) High Elf section of the Forces of Fantasy multi-army book has 40 pages of Elfies, 1 painting, 3 pages of color pics and the rest is sepia rules. You’ll look for lore, background, stories etc. in vain.
