PWork’s Lovecraftian Skirmish Game! Altar Of The Dead Gods
January 18, 2024 by brennon
PWork Wargames has now launched their 28mm Lovecraftian skirmish wargame, Altar Of The Dead Gods! You can grab the rules, cards, terrain and accessories from them allowing you to dive into some tabletop clashes between Vampires, Cultists, Hunters and more.
Altar Of The Dead Gods - Rulebook // PWork Wargames
Altar Of The Dead Gods has been designed as a grimdark Lovecraftian-themed skirmish game where you will be delving into a buried temple in search of sacred relics that once belonged to the Ancients. However, those treasures will not easily be claimed as horrors are lurking in the abyss that want to drag you away.

Inside the Rulebook, you'll find all of the information, background, game rules and more that you'll need to play the game alongside six factions and five different scenarios for you to play out.

Games between two players have been designed to be fast and brutal which has been designed to be easy for beginners to get their head around whilst also offering up enough depth for experienced wargamers looking for a game to tinker with. Army building has also been designed to be quick as well as deployment meaning that you can get to the tabletop without too much hassle!
Warband Decks
Altar Of The Dead Gods features a range of different warbands for you to choose from. You could play as Vampires, Hunters, Blood Witches, Cultists, Pilgrims Of The Church and the Decadent Waltz. I'm sure a few of these have already got you intrigued as to how they play.
Warband Decks Primus // Altar Of The Dead Gods
Split between Warband Deck Primus and Secundus (Hunters, Vampires, Blood Witches in Primus and Pilgrims of the Church, Cultists, Decadent Waltz in Secundus) you will find all of the information on the cards so you can quickly reference your units in the heat of battle.

Whilst PWork Wargames produce all of the rules, terrain and gubbins that you need to play, you're encouraged to use whatever miniatures you have in your collection to make your warbands. With a vast array of plastic, metal and resin miniatures out there in the wargaming world, I don't imagine you're going to have much of a problem making the warband you want.
The decks come with the warband and faction rules alongside a summary card for the game turn which can be very handy!
Terrain & Accessories
Altar Of The Dead Gods can be played out on a regular table and PWork Wargames has produced a great new gaming mat and a set of terrain to make it very easy to set up different scenarios. Leading the way, we have the Lost Temple gaming mat.
Lost Temple Gaming Mat // Altar Of The Dead Gods
Designed to match the dimensions you need for Altar Of The Dead Gods, the Lost Temple gaming mat features a 32mm square grid that is great for setting up your scenarios and playing out your battles. I like the eerie green finish to the flagstones which properly evokes creepy Lovecraftian vibes!
If you want some suitably epic terrain, you can also get The Buried Temple terrain set.
The Buried Temple // Altar Of The Dead Gods
Made out of MDF, it can be quickly and easily assembled in modular chunks so that you can shift the terrain elements around to match the scenarios from the Altar Of The Gods rulebook. You get eight Big Walls, six Small Walls, four Crumbling Pillars, one Altar, two Shrines and six Relic Tokens. If you were tempted to go all-in on Altar Of The Dead Gods I'd reckon it's worth scooping up the terrain alongside the rules just to make sure you can play out those scenarios without having to rummage for odds and sods in your terrain box.
I like that the game space is quite self-contained and that the size of the table remains the same. If PWork Wargames work on expansions, it will be fun to see what they do with more modular terrain sets and gaming mats.
Last but not least, as a bonus game aid, you can also pick out the Battle Tokens from PWork Wargames.

Again made of MDF, these seventy-six Battle Tokens will be handy for the different situations that arise in gameplay. You'll also get special faction tokens within the set.
Free Cards & Tokens
As a bonus, PWork Wargames has also made the Cards & Tokens from Altar Of The Dead Gods available to snap up as a PDF so you can print them at home.

You'll find all of the faction cards included here that will give you a taste of gameplay and the different mechanics for the various factions. Hopefully, we'll get a closer look at Altar Of The Dead Gods soon and can let you know how it plays!
Could you be tempted by a new Lovecraftian-themed skirmish game?

hmm…. interesting.
Interesting artwork.
Looks interesting. Love the Cthulhu Mythos, will watch eagerly.
I..will.. finish a large project..first *struggling under pressure*
Glad to see this game featured here! The authors Pawl Boracchi and Michele Finelli are from the same club I (seldomly) visit as well.
Sadly they’re not mentioned in most of the press content about AodG, while the hideous PWork logo appears everywhere and more.
So sad. Cthulhu will avenge them! I hope.
I just watched the South Park episodes where Cartman makes pals with Cthulhu – absolutely hilarious.
Cool
The enviroment IS great, the myths are always a win player
