Our Piles Of Potential – Is It Time To Cull The Collection?
November 11, 2023 by brennon
Recently over on the forums, community member @pagan8th put forth an interesting topic on "Culling The Pile" and working through your collection to see what might be better off finding a new home. It's a tough one, especially since so many of us are collectors as much as we are hobbyists, painters and wargamers.
With that in mind, have you had moments recently where you've been looking at your pile of potential and thought that it's time to shift stuff? How did you deal with it (if at all!) and what steps can you take to help avoid the pile of potential becoming that ominous pile of shame?
Why It's Hard To Cull The Pile
I recently moved from a flat to a larger house and during that process, it dawned on me just how much "stuff" I seem to have collected over the twenty-five years or so that I have been enjoying the tabletop hobby. Much like pagan8th in the forums, it dawned on me that I would have to find a space for all of it and despite having a dedicated room for hobby now in my new place, it doesn't seem to have stopped it from overflowing!
Rather than being stuffed into an old fireplace, my collection of board games, miniatures and roleplaying books are now sitting in a massive kallax (blessed be the Lord Ikea) but even then I still have four boxes in the shed and draws packed with paints, old sprues, tools and the other bits and pieces that I found myself collecting. With a heavy heart, especially recently, I've started to consider that maybe it's time to shift some of this stuff.
Much like pagan8th, the first part was getting started and to some degree, getting over the lingering guilt that I must have spent hundreds if not near a couple of thousands of pounds on some of the things in my collection. My Star Wars: Destiny collection lies dormant and gathering dust, mounds of dice and cards that saw play over two years but now sit forgotten. The same goes for my A Game Of Thrones cards, split over multiple folders and a possibly unfortunate amount of plastic boxes of sprues for games like Frostgrave and Oathmark that were the sparks of some project or other that never really lit up.
Part of me thinks that all of these bits and pieces will end up being useful one day. One day I'll teach someone how to play Destiny or I'll start that Elf army for Oathmark. I know none of those things are true. The same goes almost double for the board games I have on my shelf. I used to play routinely every Monday but now I'm lucky if a board game sees the light of day once a month. Some of those games have also been sat untouched for five or six years but I still keep a hold of them!
I think as well as a sense of guilt over the potentially "wasted" money, there's also the fact that some of these items have a nostalgic quality to them. Will I ever play Merchants & Marauders ever again? Probably not. Do I want to sell it? "But, but...what about those awesome five nights about ten years ago when we played loads of games in a row and told some epic stories?" I guess that's a no.
I think that's why it's so hard for a lot of us to actually work up the courage to start Marie Kondo'ing our way through our collections to find out what's worth getting rid of.
Starting The Process
I went to a wargaming sale recently where people were getting rid of large portions of their collection and that has started to light a little bit of a fire under me to start doing something about it and getting over those hurdles we've talked about. It's not going to be a process that takes a week. It might take months or years, but there are some steps that I think I'm going to take towards culling the pile and maybe these could be helpful to those like pagan8th and others in my position.
- Be Honest About Your Hobby Choices - As mentioned above, my hobby focus has changed. I'm not longer doing a lot of board gaming so I should start looking at what I've got on my shelves and what could easily be sold off to make space for projects that I am interested in. Being honest about what you actually like can be a big part of kickstarting the process
- You Don't Need To Sell - Whilst it would be good to get some money for the stuff in your collection, consider giving stuff away. I've done this with practically two Warhammer 40,000 armies over the last couple of years. Two friends wanted to start Orks and T'au so I literally just gave them a big box of stuff. I was never going to use it but they've got great joy out of the stuff they now own.
- If You Do Sell, Make It Easy On Yourself - eBay can be a great way to sell stuff but it can also be a mega hassle. Unless you're living in the middle of nowhere, I'd really suggest the likes of Facebook Marketplace. You can post anything and you'd be surprised how quickly people will snap stuff up. I've got rid of two big board game Kickstarters through it! I'd also massively recommend selling via Board Game Geek as well, especially for some more bespoke stuff as there are plenty of collectors who pour through that to find bargains.
- Cull With Friends! - It might be worth getting a couple of the members of your group of friends over to help you out. They might help put some elements of your hobby into perspective and keep you from getting rid of things from your collection too hastily. Maybe it'll even get you rethinking what you're going to be focusing on over the next little while!
- Don't Be Hasty - Despite those initial thoughts on beginning the cull, don't feel like you have to rush. Take everything into account and remember, this is your collection. You collected it all for a reason. Yeah, there might be something equivalent to my Star Wars: Destiny collection in your pile but you can always come up with other ways to deal with the pile.
Even if you don't end up getting rid of a bunch of stuff, maybe consider the way that you store your pile. Sorting out cupboards and drawers or those lovely kallax can be a massive help. Additionally, if you've got the space, remember that you can just tape up cardboard boxes of stuff and leave them in the shed or the garage. Even if you don't come back to them, someone else might. I know that moving and making sure I had proper storage was a big help and whilst the pile still needs culling, I've found a good way to make things feel managed if nothing else!
I guess my parting words are that everyone goes through this with their collection so you're very much not alone fellow tabletop gamer. Maybe consider diving into the forum topic with pagan8th HERE and share your thoughts. Do you think we all need to get ready for a cull of our collection?
What do you think?

I’m lucky that I have a good hobby space but I find it’s scenery that takes up the most space. Scenery comes in all sorts of shapes and it’s not the easiest to store. I’ve broken down a number of terrain boards when I got some geek gaming fleece mats. I was put off these at first but they’ve turned out to be a great space saver. They just fold up and go away and can cover a lot of games. Meanwhile the building collection will only get bigger.
I think those are a great idea. I think that the gaming mat style of things is deffo the way to go for space saving
I thought OTT had a place to sell stuff. it may not be as big as Facebook but you got the local crowd of followers.
I might see if we can kickstart the forums again for that or do something local with the gaming suite
There is the Trading Bazaar in the forum but that’s only for CoGs.

Sad to say that I haven’t culled anything yet… but I’m working on it… B-sieged by cmon was something I backed with the expansion and although I may not trash the entire game… I may strip the expansion for miniatures. Zombicide Black Plague was another mistake, but I’ve been using those minis in RPG’s for years, painting the ones I need for NPC’s… I’ll probably bag all the zombies and save the boards. Then I need to look into my pile of GW sprues from the likes of Warcry, Kill Team and AoS. Lots not even assembled there. As @brennon… Read more »
Yeah I deffo made those mistakes with Mythic Battles Pantheon and stuff – managed to sell those though so that was a weight off my mind. Thanks for getting me thinking with the forum topic and hopefully it will help others too
I have a fondness for Greek Mythology… it makes more sense to me… a different god for each aspect… love, war, death, etc… and that is why I backed Mythic Battles: Pantheon. I’ve painted core box and want to do Pandora box… that’s something I am keeping.
Started to do this a while ago with my Big Stocktake project. The plan was to finish stuff off for at least two opposing armies for a system and get rid of the surplus. Whilst at the same time it gave me the opportunity to get stuff out that I’d forgotten about and actually give some thought to if I should keep it or not. It started off okay but eventually I got distracted by other projects. I really should get back to it as I could do with freeing up some space. Terrain is my weakness. I just love… Read more »
Terrain is the problem for me now – at least it’s a growing one. I have loads of buildings I need to store but don’t have the boxes yet so I fear stuff is going to get damaged!
Terrain is a problem. I backed Carnevale because of the miniatures and the game looked fun. It’s still sitting there… mostly unpainted… but I do want more of it… Started to build a board for it, but it was crap… so I junked it… Did buy a lot of mdf buildings from TT Combat and on one rather cramped shelf in the gaming room I have mdf Venice… over a dozen buildings. Another shelf has a small selections with wild west theme… mdf is a pain to store and prone to damage so you need to be careful. And I… Read more »
Terrain can take up silly amounts of room, that’s why as you get older (and allegedly “wiser”) you learn to stop painting all those 28mm figures and move down to 15/10/6mm figures instead (as the terrain items also get a LOT smaller). PLUS the painting is a lot easier as well (just a spot of flesh coloured paint for the face and hands and you’re done. No washes, no blending no wet pallet 😀 ).
I’m still annoyed that Justin culled by throwing stuff away. Give it away. If you don’t know anyone offer it out on the discord even if you want the recipient to pay postage. Don’t waste minis. Someone will get joy out of them. One of my happiest gains was someones box of random 40k tat from ther attic. They didn’t know what was in there and a lot of it was broken. it was scattered between factions. I had months of joy working out what it all was, fixing it, tracking down replacement partd, building, and painting it up and… Read more »
Yeah can’t be throwing stuff away! As I said in the piece above, just giving it away is a great way to do things. I got a real kick out of just giving people the stuff to start new armies.
Couldn’t agree more. I recently just gave away my entire Battletech Terrain boards collection to a local club because I know there is a growing interest in the system there. It’s not even a club I go to, but their players were incredible happy, and so was I as it cleared some space.
I have had the same thoughts last night and this morning, my shed is full of figures some for games that I’ve never played, some for games I’m not likely to pick up again. I have also asked myself so I really need three Warmachine and three Hordes armies, when I haven’t played them for a while. In the past I’ve given an army away, given figures away, sold on ebay, sold to friends and the last time I sold a whole heap of stuff to Monster Merchant (they are based round the corner). Maybe with Christmas and the New… Read more »
Giftmas! If you feel that you have so much that it is too much pass it on to others. If your things are just sitting there let somebody else have them and enjoy in a glow of novelty.
If you feel the need to collect, make the collecting for something you give away as a gift. Steer your interest to others that are in this hobby as well and relish the joy of knowing they’ll go nuts with the bright and shiny you send them.
Now-me can’t be arsed painting a load of minis. That’s why I have such a massive pile of grey.
But future-me wants to do cool stuff, not stay at home trudging through all the crap now-me couldn’t bring himself to do.
Getting rid of unpainted minis not only makes now-me happy, it makes future-me free.
And inbetween-me doesn’t have to worry about that sh!t in the meantime.
Focus on a game you like. And if it’s a miniatures game, then you know what miniatures you will be keeping.
Flea markets are good — if they have a FREE table! I end up accumulating MORE stuff after a flea market.
Give ’em away to young’un during Xmas.
USA has a $250 limit on total donations to charity w/out a letter or something.
I guess if you’re on Meetup.com, you could form a local boardgame swap meet thing that meets monthly?
At the moment I’m decluttering the system I play, but have too many armies for. I’ll never use my Grey knights or dark elves, they don’t have any emotional link, so get rid. I’m lucky as there is a shop close to me called Mirfield Miniatures, that offers a good exchange rate on models. So I can get rid of the armies I don’t play and invest in the ones I do. My problem comes with games systems. I used to play distopian wars but sadly the person I played died 5 years ago. So its a game I know… Read more »
Brill article, in the process of this right now, i find my interest in WW2 very much the main interest for me now so that is my focus even with space WH40k armies that i have built just play a modern version of WW2 using Bolt action rules. So now its just the board games to look at.
Basically if you’re looking to shift the unused minis from a “Boardgame with minis” (if you’ve used some of them for other games over the years), and don’t feel that you’re going to ever play the Boardgame you got them with. If they are of the Fantasy variety, them bundle them up with some unit base sized pieces of MDF and stick a copy of the KoW rules in there with possibly some cheaper craft paints and a paintbrush or two and gice them away to the kids of friends and family over Xmas (if they’ve ever shown any previous… Read more »
IF your looking to get rid of any unpainted historicals (either in metal or plastic) try and find a fellow Wargamer in South America to just pot them off to (although it’s 50/50 if they actually arrive). Our fellow gamers find it hard to get non GW minis over there and when they do they cost an unbelievable amount (in fact so high that it would make our fellow Canadian and Australian gamer suddenly happier about the silly prices they have to pay to get minis from the UK or USA). I’ve got a “pen pal” game (well email actually)… Read more »
