Annnnnd they’re done.

These were actually super fun to work on, and a great change of scenery after running a Halloween Cthulhu game for 11 hours one day. I was genuinely surprised that I enjoyed these, and they’ve definitely made me more open to working on more sci-fi in the future. The customer loved them, too, which is the main thing.

Oh, the bases! They’re simply a base of Eshin Grey, dabbled with a couple of other lighter colours, and topped with a generous slop of Agrax Earthshade.

I thought these were Stormtroopers, but apparently not

Whatever they are, they were really fun to paint, probably my favourite of the whole set. The white armour was a bit concerning at first, but ended up being super quick to achieve by simply a heavy white drybrush right over the black undercoat, followed by some brighter white layering.

Only fair they get some too.

It was at this point that I realised using clear yellow airbrush inks over the smoke gave it a really cool effect. The smoke itself is simply a heavy grey drybrush over black undercoat, topped with an even heavier white drybrush. Sometimes, simple is best.

First up for the good guy team, I picked out who I am told is Anakin before he went bad, and his mate.

Next up were these guys. Again, a lot of fun to paint with just the right level of detail.

Did I mention how flippin’ fragile these things are?!

I was terrified the whole way through painting these. I am aware the one on the left is Darth Maul, but I have no clue who the one on the right is. What I do know, however, is that I loved painting it! I surprised myself with just how fun these were to work on. They seemed to suit my style of painting well, allowing for plenty of layering, glazing, and highlights.

Ok, maybe more like 2 weeks ago in a local hobby store.

But anyway, I was recently commissioned to paint the Shatterpoint starter set for someone. Now, I’ve never even watched the movies. Science fiction doesn’t do it for me. I don’t understand it, and I’m not entirely keen on the general aesthetic of it all. In general, I prefer the sweeping robes and soaring towers of the fantasy genre. But I took the commission gladly, and I was excited for the challenge to paint something entirely different to that which I would normally work on.

At first look, I have to say, I was impressed with the minis. They had the exact right amount of detail for me – enough to make really interesting models without being ridiculous to paint. The lightsabers some of them have were a bit terrifying though. Incredibly fragile.

The first models I painted were the droids (I’ll apologise now for getting the names of these things wrong throughout the project). Figured I’d start simple and work up. The customer had requested them painted true to the box art, so much printing of reference photos ensued.
