Russian Well and Crane Tutorial

To produce the above required using the following steps:

  1. Always use a scalpel blade to cut out your MDF pieces from their frame to avoid damages.
  2. Trim any excess of the MDF pieces.
  3. Glue with super glue and an instant activator spray.
  4. Glue sand to the base as texture to simulate earth and gravel.
  5. Spray paint with Halford’s ‘Matt Black’ Primer.
  6. Drill hole in the center of the well base.
  7. Thread needle with cotton through well base hole and the eye hole of the crane.

  1. I twisted the string round until wound tight, then superglued in place using an instant activator spray.
  2.  I then cut away the excess glue and sting to make sure the models base is smooth and flat.
  3. I added several light layers of super glue to solidify the cottons and gibe more of a rough rope like texture, which I achieved by stroking with a rubber glove (definitely not something that has ever featured in any other context….not even at the Weekend!).

After painting the brick work a terracotta colour with 2 highlights adding yellow to get lighter, it was time to add a masonry mortar effect that I have developed. I use 50%/50% water to Vallejo ‘Stone Grey’ 70.884 to create a thick wash, which I then sponge of leaving a residue, which I dry with an hair dryer.

To get the colour of the rope I painted it Vallejo ‘Chocolate Brown’ with a liberal highlight of Vallejo ‘U.S. Field Drab’, and lastly a light highlight of Vallejo ‘Dark Sand’.

The final step took three squirts of Vallejo ‘Gloss Varnish’ over 3 evenings to create the water effect, using a needle to burst any air bubbles for a smooth finish.
