Community Spotlight: Paladins, Witchfinders & 6mm American Civil War
September 27, 2023 by brennon
Come and join us for another delve into the Projects to find the best of the best from the last week or so. We're going to be getting stuck into lots of great-looking miniature wargaming painting and hobbying this week...
...make sure to always let us know what YOU have been working on and share it across the site.
Bretonnian Paladin by fleboy
Starting off this week's Community Spotlight, we have a look at someone impatient to get started with The Old World. fleboy was very excited by the idea of painting up some Bretonnians and so decided to find one online that could be painted up to help scratch that itch.
This take on the Bretonnian Paladin is a nice twist on the one that we've seen previewed as part of the look ahead at what's coming for Warhammer The Old World and manages to capture the essence of the sculpt. I also think that fleboy has done a superb job of painting up the miniature and I really like the bold choice of colours throughout.
Clearly, this is a miniature that captured the attention of fleboy as they have gone in and done lots of extra work here including the wonderful basing and the addition of the plinth! When a plinth is involved, you know someone cares about their miniatures and wants to show them off. I really like the work on the halved tabard and the extra splash of colour that you see on the small shields.
There's even more to like on the back of the miniature where all of the kit that this questing knight is carrying around with him has been given the appropriate amount of attention.
That work on the fleur de lys is also properly ace and it's not something that I would have attempted. So, hats off to fleboy for doing that! A great little painting project and hopefully enough to tide fleboy over before The Old World arrives probably sometime in 20234.
Witchfinder Vs Beekeeper by tinyheadbones
Next up, we're looking at another smaller project where there was a definitive focus. Inspired by the BBC comedy, The Witchfinder (which, as tinyheadbones points out, was "ok") tinyheadbones wanted to put together a diorama/vignette which focused on a hapless Witchfinder and his charge coming up against something a bit spooky.
The idea behind the project is that the figures, from the Bloody Miniatures and Midlam range, have found themselves in a bit of a sticky situation. The Witchfinder might have found themselves a witch in the local village but now something else has decided to come out of the woodwork!
The miniatures have been painted up really nicely and I like that this was one of those ideas that just needed to be turned into something physical. I like the work on the clothes for the two main characters in particular and the Beekeeper is just the right side of weird and uncanny. Proper folk horror! It almost feels all the more sinister with the addition of the idyllic scene that they find themselves in, wandering through a field of lovely flowers.
A random addition to a collection perhaps but I always like seeing smaller projects like this. I think a lot of us think in armies but sometimes, it's good to think small like this and just have some fun doing something different. It might be a good way to cleanse the palette before diving back into something huge.
6mm American Civil War by commodorerob
Last but not least, perhaps inspired by the chatter on a recent XLBS, commodorerob has been showing off some work on a 6mm American Civil War project that he's coming back to! I thought I'd show off some of the work that commodorerob has done in the past for this as it will be fun to see where it goes next, especially with us looking to do more for the period in the studio.
The project currently shows off the armies of the Union and the Confederates that had been completed in the past by commodorerob and I have to say, they look great. I still remember seeing some of the 6mm range that he had painted on Lloyd's computer in the studio and it was ace to see. It's made all the more impressive, I think, by the flags which add that pomp and pageantry.
In addition to the two armies, commodorerob also showed of the work going into some 6mm terrain which helps to elevate tabletops and turn it from a gaming space to something more like the real battlefield. I have to say, these look ace! Lovely tiny houses.
In some of the more recent additions to the project, commodorerob has been talking about the process of painting these miniatures. 6mm can be potentially daunting so having a good breakdown like this might prove invaluable for someone looking to get started in 6mm and this period of warfare. I think the final results look great and hopefully, we'll see more popping up as part of this project, especially now it has been resurrected!
