Happy Sunday CoGs abd OTTers!
It’s the XLBS Show………..Happy Sunday Fellow CoGs!
I do like the ‘Altar of Freedom’s rules. Very very NICE! ??
They’ve trimmed down stratagems greatly in 10th 40k. You now have a handful core stratagems and six faction specific stratagems. It works a lot better. You have useable stratagems, and you actually get to use the stratagems instead of being overwhelmed by choice. Also, they’re colour coded for when you can use them (yours or opponent’s phase).
Morning, funny you should be talking about ACW war and reenactment of the actual battles, I was play testing a new version of ACW rules last weekend based on the CCC system ( Used for MeG) and the direction that is going in is to only be based on recreation of battles. There will be no points based system. It works brilliantly. We played the battle of Monacacy
Although we played using Wofun figures, I got my 6mm stuff out and looking to get them on the battlefield again soon.
Happy Sunday OTTers and XLBSers.
Nice one Justin an Co.
Kermit the obese.?
It puts the lotion on the armour?
As hopefully long gone game mechanics go, the idea of adding up a load of factors, rolling two dice and subtracting one from the other, adding that to the factors, cross-referencing the total with the number of figures in your unit on a chart, noting down the number on the chart and adding it to a running total from previous turns and then removing a figure every time the total gets to twenty was not a favourite of mine. Phil Barker has a lot to answer for… I don’t see a problem with variable movement if you’re not wedded to… Read more »
Ooh nice show guy’s.
Thanks for the Golden Button. I like random movement for old school fun stuff like Night Goblin Fanatics and the like, bring back the ultra random and silly fun Skaven and Orks, GW kind of went this way with super early AoS just a shame that game was completely unplayable but the vibe was there. It’s not so great when you’re trying to move units in cooperation with each other and it all falls apart. Too Fat Lardies try to mitigate this with mobs and the like in Infamy Infamy and Sharp Practice Sudan automatically snapping/staying in cohesion within a… Read more »
Happy Sunday. While there are no specific rules I dislike or have a bugbear with I tend to dislike bloat or added complexity just for the sake of it. Justin’s example of the same rules with different names depending on faction (in 9th 40k) is a good example and is something GW got rid of for 10th. I guess I’m also leaning away from swingyness in games. While I really like Frostgrave and Rangers of Shadow Deep, being at the whims of a single roll of a D20 can be incredibly frustrating. I’ve been watching the Silver Bayonet week and… Read more »
Weekender time! 00:00 3/4 ahead! 02:30 Ash? Canadian Book, redoing studio… I think I missed something 03:00 cheesy chips 03:30 and this is how WW III starts 03:45 War is never civilized! 06:00 Whisky XD 10:10 do you really need to buy books for historical things? Can’t you just get them from the library? Much more cost efficient. 14:00 “That hill never was at that battle!” incoming! 18:45 Nooo Llyodshot! Nooooo! 30:00 Moonstone was in my thoughts about spending the Twitch money. 34:00 Bolden Guttons! 38:15 Hip to be square *dance* *sing* 40:00 20mm… nice 44:00 Pile of Potential! Yeah!… Read more »
The only thing I dislike are rules like DBM where units are alive or dead but no degradation of unit strength no matter the number of combats its been involved in
I think, as came out in your discussion, that there aren’t necessarily bad game mechanics only bad game designs where mechanics are ill placed in the context of the whole game engine.
except random movement which is always bad
I don’t like reading books during my game. Keep The Rules Condensed.
Taunt me with the greatest of all awards. Shame on me, just shame. Sadness all day for the Golden Button has slipped thru my fingers yet again.
I’m fine with most mechanics these days, I even don’t mind random movement although Gerrys suggestion about using Average dice than d6 is a good idea. So what I don’t like in particular order: 1/ Rules Bloat is definately a thing and keeping things concise with sub referencing 3 books every time take an action for a unit a definate no-no. 2/ Initiative based, Alternating activation, this just seems a bit gamey, as players will maneuver a death star unit as there last thing ready for an overwhelming alpha strike especially if win the next turn roll off for what… Read more »
you’re welcome!
I’d better update some projects then!!
Thanks for the golden button!
In answer to the jig question, yes, I made a jig. Could I have used square bases? Bushido does use rounds of 30, 40 and 50mm but I guess you could use squares. BUT, I only like squares for ranked up games, I prefer rounds for skirmish. So a jig it is to get the front arc on the base.
Do I regret my choice? No. Would I do it all again? Yes.
Sorry Avernos but I actually like the Lardy random movement. It takes away the theodolite wielding sergeant major ordering troops to halt at a particular blade of grass to ensure you are just out of range etc. It can also provide those moments of hilarity when they go wrong for someone. Also don’t mind the order and movement system under the Black Powder family of rules as again it gets someone to state what they want to do with varying levels of success. As an ex DBM player I hate the protractor and divider movement of those systems with a… Read more »
I don’t mind random movement so much (although it isn’t my favourite approach to Fog of War issues) but I do detest random charge distance (as per WFB 8th for example). I can accept that troops may trip up or be tired or whatever, so that would affect marching or moving around. But when it comes to the charge and you see the whites of their eyes, and adrenaline cuts in. Sure, there could be a morale impact on a weak unit charging a stronger one, but totally random factors… no!!!
