Community Spotlight: Horus Heresy Characters, 20mm WW2 & Bushido Heroes
September 20, 2023 by brennon
Come and join us for another delve into the Projects to find the best of the best from the last week or so. We're going to be getting stuck into lots of great-looking miniature wargaming painting and hobbying this week...
...make sure to always let us know what YOU have been working on and share it across the site.
Horus Heresy Characters by elessar2590
We start off with a look back into the massive civil war of The Horus Heresy. Here, elessar2590 is going to be working on painting up a series of characters from this period. The starting point has been around Garviel Loken, taking a few different sculpts that have been 3D sculpted.
The most recent addition to the project was this take on Garviel Loken as he was during the time spent on Istvaan III. I really like the way that the bright armour has been painted, especially since the way that elessar2590 has attempted it gives it a distinctly grimdark vibe. I also like all of the work that has gone into painting up the trim on the armour.
I also really like the red cloak that gives the miniatures a nice focal point to latch onto. I also have to give props to elessar2590 for doing the freehand work on the shoulder pad. It's not something that I would have attempted but I think it looks great. I also like the red eyes that have been picked out across the armour.
There is also this additional version of Garviel Loken for you to check out here from an earlier point in the timeline. Before everything hit the fan!
Other characters are also in the works from elessar2590 and you can go and check them out over on the project. I am intrigued to see what other characters come to life and, as elessar2590 says, this is giving them a good chance to try out lots of different painting techniques. It's a great way to reignite the passion for painting!
20mm World War II Germans by piers
Next up, we're looking back to Historical wargaming with piers. He has been working away on more World War II Germans in 20mm scale. The most recent additions to the project have been the Fallschirmjäger.
These have been in the works since June and over the last few months, we've seen the collection of options expand. As always, pier's work is excellent and I love seeing how the uniforms have come together. I also really like the way that piers paints faces and manages to pull out all of the facial details.
I also really like the work on the Fallschirmjager camouflage. It's also all of the little details here and there that are fun to get a look at as you're looking at the miniatures. All of the kit has been painted up and there are even little details like scribbles on some of the weapons like the panzerfauts.
I really like the longer bases for these soldiers who are lying down. It's something that I did for some of my T'au back in the day but I think that might now be considered "modelling for advantage". I also like that extra texture added to the side of the bases here which helps to blend the miniatures into the tabletop terrain.
Bushido Characters by redvers
Last but not least, we're revisiting the Bushido range that is getting painted up by redvers. It was nice looking at them getting stuck into the game in a past Community Spotlight and now we're seeing the collection expanding!
I really liked the work that had gone into painting Hozumi Maha in particular. I thought the reds and purples looked great and the brighter colours work so nicely when complimented by the black and purple ghost being summoned up around him. It's also good to see writing added to the scroll rather than it being left blank.
As well as the miniature for Hozumi Maha, there are also a few more characters from the Bushido range that take things in different directions creatively. For example, you've got the dastardly Hozumi Maha but then you've got the bright and mystical Ryokeen as well!
The pale colour used for the fur is nice and the orange then looks properly poppy! You get a proper mystical vibe from the miniature, especially when you work in the lovely, luscious basing. It shows off how many ways Bushido can go when it comes to painting.
