About the Project

Once upon a time, there were many metal miniatures that were played with nearly every day. Then, over the years, they were neglected and replaced by plastic and resin. Some of these miniatures never made it and ended up in the bin. However, some remained at the parents' house. In 2018, these miniatures came back and were placed in a Dettol bath in the garage and FORGOTTEN until 2023. This is the story of their rescue and resurrection.

It's been a while

I’ve not posted anything for ages but have been working away on these two. The first is a newer plastic Ork I got free somewhere. Although a bit bigger than the older metal ones he will fit in ok.

Medic!

I wanted to move away from the usual red and white for medic. I went for the deep green and gold of a Paramedic.

These are the opponent’s to the Orks below.  They were all painted with Army Painter speed paints with a little extra highlighting added. I’m going to need to put a battlefield together now.

I think this may have been a Christmas Marine from back in the 80’s. He’s going to be an assault marine now. Metal jump packs on Ebay are a little expensive so used a Cadian flamer tank as a replacement. He’s been drybrushed ready for Speedpaint.

These were all painted using Army Painter Speed Paints. There was a tiny bit of additional highlighting and a Dark Tone wash over the mettalics.

They are my 250 pts for Grimdark Firefight.

These were my test minis. Both painted with Army Painter speed paints and then a final few highlights added.

In the 80's

So when this ork came out of the gloop it was missing an arm. There was no arm in the gloop and I can’t remember if it went in with one. I hunted around for a suitable arm on Ebay. What I noticed was that ork arms in the 80’s were smaller than today.

In the 80's

I chopped the arm down quite a bit to make the fit and I don’t think it looks too much like a case of elephantiasis.

So what did I think of my first slap chopping. I looked at mini for 24 hours and couldn’t decide if I liked it or not. It’s very different from how I usually paint. I think I need a harder white drybrush next time. Anyway, I did a little more work on the skin and the hair and I think it is OK now

This mini was also in the gloop. I think it was from “Paranoia”. I thought he woild make a good test model. I bought a cheap chopping board feom Poundland and scored it up quite a bit and primed it black to create a drybrush pallette. I then gave the mini a strong drybrush of grey and then a light white one. I now need to buy some speedpaints etc.

So what next?

Sell them on Ebay? No I couldn’t do that. Use them in One Page Rules Grim Dark Fire Fight, I think yes. So get them painted. I have to admit my eyesight is getting worse and painting is becoming more difficult. So I’ve decided to have a go at slapchop.  If it doesn’t work out they go can back in the Dettol. To continue on the retro path I found a can of Choas Black hidden away.

So what next?

I also had a reasonable group of Marines. I remember having some of these when Rogue Trader was first released

Using a peg, some sturdy gloves (that still smell of Dettol) I removed the minis from the 5 year old gloop .

I was now confronted by minis looking a bit like the below image. Using a toothbrush stolen from my daughter, the magic began to take place.

Dettol!

This all started when I decided to clear out the garage. I found a forgotten tupperwsre on a shelf with contents looking a little like the above.
