Community Spotlight: The Old World, American Civil War & Alien Terrain!
August 9, 2023 by brennon
Come and join us for another delve into the Projects to find the best of the best from the last week or so. We're going to be getting stuck into lots of great-looking miniature wargaming painting and hobbying this week...
...make sure to always let us know what YOU have been working on and share it across the site.
The Old World - Orcs & Goblins by lovecraft2020
We start off this week with a look at someone tinkering with classic Warhammer Fantasy Battles miniatures for use with The Old World. The mighty Orcs & Goblins are the focus of lovecraft2020 who has been working on some Orc Boyz that will eventually be part of a new regiment or two.
The work on these Orcs is great and very in keeping with the grim and perilous feel of The Old World. I love the darker skin that lovecraft2020 has gone with which makes these Orcs look a bit more serious! It also works really nicely with their grotty teeth and beady red eyes!
The various Orcs have come together very nicely over the past while. There's something awesome about these older kits and I like the kinds of poses that you can get out of them. They were also nice and simple to paint with defined portions to paint up in rusty metals and worn leather. The bases also work really nicely here, giving off that badland vibe.
Keep an eye out for more from this particular project as I'm sure we're going to be getting a whole lot more from lovecraft2020. What's quite nice about this is that lovecraft2020 has been motivated by The Old World to bring an old project back to life. It's neat that a lot of folks are going to be diving back into their collections as the new game rolls around.
American Civil War by nightrunner
Next up, we're getting Historical with some of the awesome miniatures from nightrunner. They are working on a 1/72 scale American Civil War army that will use the Sharp Practice rules as their basis. The most recent updates have been showing off some of the finished miniatures for the Confederates via Italeri and Hat Models.
I think the finished work on these miniatures is just awesome. I think the grey uniforms have come together very nicely and I like the subtle highlighting. Combine that with that very poppy yellow and you've got a good-looking army that will properly pop on the tabletop. I also really like the work on the horse there for the one officer.
There is a very nice range of Confederate miniatures now coming to life on their various regiment trays here. I have to say, the bases here are also excellent and really drop the miniatures into an evocative setting. nightrunner has also been battling the heat to get these miniatures painted up and so I have to doff my cap to them for that as well!
To complete this set of updates, nightrunner has also painted up this ace Wagon from Warbases.
Now that is one lovely-looking wagon. If you're intrigued by the look of this project and the miniatures here, you can take a peek at more of the terrain building and more that has gone into this project. I really liked the trees that nightrunner was working on and there's a good breakdown of the miniatures being used early in the process.
Alien Terrain by BMozzer
BMozzer has been getting stuck into a bit of Warhammer 40,000 and so snagged some 3D printable files from Thingiverse in order to make an alien world.
There is a breakdown of the paints that were used to bring these to life but I was immediately taken by the shimmering insectoid vibes that you get from the pieces. You could imagine these stretching up into the sky, surrounded by buzzing creatures as they feed on anything that tries to sneak past. The shimmering beetle colours then work very well in contrast to the reds and pinks.
There are some fascinating pieces as part of this collection and what's nice about this is that it immediately sets you up on an alien world. No ambiguity here, it's all alien all the time and very good for the new set of miniatures arriving as part of Warhammer 40,000 10th Edition.
Set atop a desert landscape, this looks like the perfect set-up for an awesome game of Warhammer 40,000 or perhaps it could be used to represent alien landscapes in games like Stargrave. Either way, these look ace and they don't seem like they took too long to paint either!
