About the Project

Inspired by the artwork of the Golden Daemon from old and new Warhammer artists, I thought I'd take the Chaos Daemons Combat Patrol and paint it up in the style of that venerable painting monster.

As I have said in the project description, this all came about when I was joking about making a straightforward Khorne Daemon army for Warhammer 40,000. I joked that I could paint them up to match the colour scheme of the Golden Daemon from Warhammer with the bright yellow skin. The named Bloodletter hero, Skulltaker, even carries the Slayer Sword.

So, I went looking for some artwork…

Some Of The Inspiration

As you can see, the skin is very yellow and so the colour of choice for this was the bright and poppy Iyanden Yellow from the Contrast range. I used this as the basis for the different miniatures in the army.

Additionally, the old Golden Daemon art shows the miniature with regular “bone” coloured horns. So, I wanted to use that here too.

Some Of The Inspiration

The more modern artwork representing the Golden Daemon plays around with the scheme a little more and uses darker horns but I quite liked the ease of blending the off-white into the yellow.

With that in mind, it was time to get my hands on the Combat Patrol and get to work on it. It shouldn’t take that long to paint since Contrast is in play here and the Khorne Bloodletters are fairly simple miniatures too.

Additionally, this army has been designed for Warhammer 40,000 but it could also be used for Age Of Sigmar too. I could even use this to dive into Reign In Hell if I liked.

I also wanted to theme this specifically around the Daemons of Khorne. So, there are no miniatures coming to the extended collection from other Gods. No Tzeentch, Slaanesh or Nurgle here! Only the Blood/Paint God’s followers…

The Bloodmaster

The first miniature I painted from the set was the character that leads the Combat Patrol, the Bloodmaster.

The Bloodmaster

The miniature was great for testing out some of my scheme ideas. I had the skin to work with but also the bone and metal elements too. I think that it worked quite nicely and I have since tidied up the eyes that looked a bit wonky.

It didn’t take long to paint the miniature at all and I was really happy with the final look. Being covered in bumps, horns and more, the Contrast did a superb job. I could also just use washes to make the different elements of the miniature pop.

I might add to the bases a little more later on down the line. I have a bunch of skulls to throw into the mix alongside plenty of blood!

From there it was firing on all cylinders and I had a bunch of plastic to paint. I have done the Bloodmaster but there are also…

20x Bloodletters, 10x Khorne Flesh Hounds and 3x Bloodcrushers

I actually ended up getting quite a lot done this week!

I thought it would be good to get some painting done on the rank and file next. It would be a good test as to how quickly it would take to get through them if I needed to power on through.

Bloodletters!

These miniatures have all been finished off now but I thought it was neat looking at how they came together. I tried to get rid of a lot of the mould lines but there are a fair few in places. But, the painting of them took no time at all really!

I think the miniatures were finished in around three hours. My partner nodded off over the weekend so I sat down and just got stuck in.

Bloodletters!

What’s really nice about this is that I think the unit looks awesome when it’s all done and dusted. The yellow really stands out and I think giving them solidly “gold” weapons helps to make the process a little easier. I also decided to leave most of their horns yellow apart from the leader which made sense in my mind.

I also had some fun with the bloody icon that these Daemons carry into battle. I painted this up with the same Balthasar Gold and Contrast Red for the blood. I then slicked the blood in Blood For The Blood God for good measure.

Bloodletters!

This meant that I had a good chunk of the miniatures done for this army and when it came to doing more Bloodletters, it wouldn’t take long at all.

Next up was a change of pace. I wanted to play around with the different units so I wouldn’t get bored of painting up the Combat Patrol.

Khorne Flesh Hounds

Again, I really loved working with the yellow. I also used the colour wheel to work out the colour for the eyes when going for bright blue. I also went with an orange wash over the “fur” on the back of the Flesh Hounds to make them look a little different and make up for the fact that there’s no bone on some of their backs.

Khorne Flesh Hounds

I built all of the Khorne Flesh Hounds but went through the process of finishing off just one unit so it was done and dusted. These took even less time and a lot of that was just waiting for things to dry.

Khorne Flesh Hounds

Again, I am looking forward to seeing these charging over the tabletop. The next of the jobs is to paint up the Bloodcrushers once I’ve got them built.

Going To 1000 Points

The last post for the moment is just looking at where I’m taking the army once I’ve got the Combat Patrol done. The full 1000-point army is…

  • Skulltaker (Warlord)
  • Bloodmaster
  • Bloodmaster
  • Karanak
  • 10x Bloodletters
  • 10x Bloodletters
  • 3x Bloodcrushers
  • 10x Fleshhounds
  • 5x Fleshhounds

I’ll be able to bring a lot of these units in from Deep Strike via The Warp in order to get into close combat quicker, especially with some of the Strategems for the Chaos Daemons right now.

It’s not exactly the most complicated army to use. You charge in and kill things in close combat as quickly as possible whilst holding some objectives with quick units like the Flesh Hounds.

From the 1000 mark, I would probably add a Daemon Prince Of Khorne, some more Bloodcrushers (get them up to 5), a Skullmaster to ride with the Bloodcrushers and perhaps a couple of Skull Cannons. I’m not a massive fan of the look of the Skull Cannons but I could probably use some ranged firepower!
