Epic Is Back! Legions Imperialis For Warhammer: The Horus Heresy
July 3, 2023 by brennon
Games Workshop previewed something pretty big and yet pretty small this weekend. Epic has returned in a fashion with Legions Imperialis coming out later this year focused around the Warhammer: The Horus Heresy period.
Legions Imperialis // Warhammer: The Horus Heresy
Shop Warhammer: The Horus Heresy @ Store.OnTableTop
Shop Aeronautica Imperialis @ Store.OnTableTop
Shop Adeptus Titanicus @ Store.OnTableTop
The game allows you to play out the epic battles of The Horus Heresy on the proper scale. You'll no longer be trying to fit everything onto a traditional gaming table and can instead bring masses and masses of Troops, Vehicles, Titans and more to the tabletop with a new range of plastic miniatures.
Legions Imperialis is compatible with the miniatures that Games Workshop have already released like Adeptus Titanicus and Aeronautica Imperialis meaning that those miniatures can be used in your games of Legions Imperialis if you like! That means it's all around the same scale, coming in at around 8mm.
When it comes to the miniatures, you'll be able to pick up a mix of different Space Marines to form the basis of your fighting force for the period.
Space Marines // Legions Imperialis
You'll be able to bring a range of regular Space Marines to the tabletop alongside familiar vehicles. For example, the Space Marine half of this box comes with Command Squads, Tactical Legionaries, Assault Marines, Support Legionaries and even a host of Legion Cataphractii Terminators. You also get the Contemptor Dreadnoughts which can be armed with various weapons alongside the Sicaran Battle Tanks and the Predators.
On the Solar Auxilia side, you get an equally excellent array of options for you to use when building your armies for Legions Imperialis.
Solar Auxilia // Legion Imperialis
The set comes with a Solar Auxilia Legate Commander, an Auxilia Tactical Command Section, a whole host of Auxiliaries, four Auxiliaries with Flamers, four units of Veletarii Shock Troops and then finally, a set of Charonite Ogryns. That's at least sorted when it comes to the foot troops!
You've then got the mighty Aethon Heavy Sentinels which haven't been seen before, a set of Leman Russ Battle Tanks and two massive Malcador Heavy Tanks. You get a nice variety of weapons with all of these allowing you to drop a withering amount of firepower onto the tabletop.
You'll also note that there are two impressive Warhound Titans included in the box which will provide you with something fun to tinker with once you've worked your way through all of that teeny, tiny infantry.
When Is Legions Imperialis Released?
Legions Imperialis is going to be dropping later this year in August. You'll be able to pick up the main boxed set and split it with a friend to make two forces right out of the box OR you can just go all in and pick up the set for yourself and make a massive army for use in the game.
Legions Imperialis Boxed Set // Warhammer: The Horus Heresy
None of the miniatures in the box are Legion specific so you can go in and paint them up however you like. The Games Workshop team painted them as Death Guard but they could be any of the Traitor or Loyalist Legions that you collect. You could use this to do a mini version of what you already have in 28mm or maybe take this as a chance to do something new.
Additionally, all of the Solar Auxilia there can equally be traitorous or loyalist depending on what you want to do. Plenty of the regular humans on different worlds sided with Horus rather than find themselves crushed under power-armoured boots.
You'll also be able to get your hands on the new Legions Imperialis Rulebook separately if you prefer (it also comes in the big box!).
Legions Imperialis Rulebook // Warhammer: The Horus Heresy
This will contain all of the rules for playing the game in one place and give you access to miniatures from Adeptus Titanicus and Aeronautica Imperialis. Additionally, all of the previous terrain for those games is going to be available for you to pick up once again so you can create some properly epic battlefields.
I think this is a great idea from Games Workshop. People have been calling out for it for a long time and a lot of folks are going to be eager to give this a go I think. Keeping it with The Horus Heresy also means that they are able to make miniatures for lots of armies without having to worry about going down the route of crafting Xenos and the like!
I know a lot of people would have liked Warhammer 40,000-styled Epic to return but who knows, if this goes well, perhaps we'll see that in the future.
Will you be picking up Legions Imperialis?

Space Marines vs other Space Marines. *yawn*
Wake me up when they get to Nids and Orks.
Also: any words on price? I’m guessing 200+ USD/GBP/EUR
Epic was terrific – the thing I played the most in the 90s. Could I be arsed doing it all again? I think I’m safe missing out.
I am quite looking forward to this, one of the good things about epic was that you had access to vehicles and warmachines you didn’t at full scale 40k,and allowed things only read about in lore, so get me my Captitol Imperalis already. However… I get not having eldar, orks, squats, tyranids and Necrons in Horus Heresy as there is 40k proper (plus some weren’t around), but this is a different scale and gamesystem, not just a different set of rules. Seems like a real missed oppurtunity not to include other races. Perhaps they will do a series of campaign… Read more »
A bit of a faustian bargain as I see it. Starting with HH as they need to bring out less kits to make “everyone” viable? Prospect of moving into a 40K version as it progresses? Or buy in to find it is something of a isolated little cul-de-sac and never really goes anyway. My mind is almost already looking at this and thinking “Cool model range, I could get these and if the rules don’t live up or whither in the vine I could still find other rules to play them with”. If the game they come with is any… Read more »
They already vaguely said to start with 30K and see where it goes, see the interest of people and maybe then go to 40k.
This is where I see the problem beginning for this game, all power armored humans with no xenos. There is not a single player in my group, seven players with the odd wanderer every now and then, that plays power armored humans. All of us were excited by the announcement and then extremely disappointed that it was all power armored humans. We want this game to be super successful but I doubt any of us will buy it, at least this box set anyway. If the rulebook comes out separately a couple of us MAY buy it. If they release… Read more »
EPIC SCALE PRIMARCHS!
I still have an Epic Magnus kicking around somewhere
well I think it’s value just went up!
Epic Magnus exclusive without Nipple Horns! Quids in
Lol.
Im surprised i was expecting a 8mm rehash of the larger scale heresey box set with the same models for two factions. i will put my hand up and admit that I didn’t expect solar auxilia. That said id rather orks, elder and nids so doubt will be picking this up
Pretty excited for this. Although I’ll be 3D Printing everything. They’re being pretty cagey on base sizes, my money is on not 25mm and some weird “Epic tm” base.
Round bases? Gerr will be spitting…
I have to admit, this has piqued my interest. Ive seen a lot of people in my sphere kind of put off by the fact “it’s just more Powe Armour vs Power Armour again” but I’ve always avoided the Power Armour TM factions because it always felt like I would need 10,000 point games and three days to play them. Taking it down to this scale and zooming out from the action is actually what makes me think I could enjoy playing Space Marines on the table top in this form where as I’ve always been put off starting them… Read more »
For a preview advertised as “NOT Warhammer 40,000” they did an oddly good job of shoehorning the 41st millennium universe into the preview, this was the headliner for the entire show NOT Cities of Sigmar nor The Old World, shame really as they’ve been slow playing the reveals for both of them for months now and all they could manage for either was a starter set & 1 model, Horus Heresy got far more love than it needed, they really need to stop treating the Heresy as “NOT 40k” as a loophole to show off “40k” merch. While I’m not… Read more »
The new epic armour does look good.
Kinda like the idea of epic, but space marines are so boring to look at. If there were aliens I might be interested.
Camouflage on tanks is more interesting (still working on Flames of War painting!
Does anyone else do an epic scale wargame that’s SF?
Dropzone Commander at I think 10mm?
Technically Battletech and Bot War @pagan8th
I have Citytech from many years ago. Still have Silent Death lurking somewhere.
Smaller models mean bigger profits 🙂
I had the original Epic set in fact I still have it up in the loft. I like the idea of epic returning it makes a lot of sense to take Adeptus Titanicus and Aeronautica Imperialis to the next level. However it is not for me and that is just down to the armies involved. The Solar Auxilia look fun and sure we might get admech as well. What I really wanted was to see a 40k and push my mini eldar models around the table. Eldar titans would have been pretty cool to play in this scale. I am… Read more »
I’ll probably get this. I was a GHQ catalogue models painter, and micro scale is by far and away my favourite scale.
Epic was a great game – I actually had a converted home set of rules for playing modern micro armour out of Epic: Armageddon!
And I like almost everything Horus Heresy, so there I am, just waiting for this, now.
Good news…at first. Then I needed a reality check to kick in. The issue is with the “old” sets of Space Marine and 40 Epic you got a TON of plastic minis (for example the £9.99 Imperial Guard box had 175 minis in it, while the Space Marine starter set had over 500 minis (including one Warlord Titan) for about £50. Nowadays we’re getting just 223 minis, and you can bet it’s going to cost over £50 😀 The issue is GW now really seem to be steering themselves towards a boutique level of game prices (issue is they sell… Read more »
At last! I used to absolutely love EPIC and hope in due course they’ll bring back other, non-human 40K factions, but that was clearly never going to be on the cards for the initial years of a new ‘Epic’ scale game. I’m pleased to have the opportunity to play some Horus Heresy battles with decently size armies that I may actually get around to building and painting – it’s so much faster to do both on armies of this scale! I wish there were some more marines and vehicles in this set rather than the Solar Auxilia actually. They look… Read more »
And just like that my savings account started to tremble in abject fear as it knew its owner was going all in+ on this game. My gaming career started with Epic and now it’s back!
