Arabian Nights by horati0nosebl0wer

We start off this week's Community Spotlight with horati0nosebl0wer who has been working away on an awesome army for use in SAGA: Age Of Magic with a neat twist to it. This army has got a distinctly Arabian Nights vibe to it and is already looking awesome, packed with fun conversion work and mighty monsters that would make Harryhausen proud.

One of the miniatures that immediately caught my eye was this fellow. If you're going to have anyone taking to the skies and potentially leading your army, it would have to be someone on a flying carpet, right? The work on the design for the carpet is just lovely and I really like the choice of colours as a whole. Going with this theme immediately lets you play around with big, bold and bright colours. Designed using a number of different components, I think it has come together nicely.

Another of the miniatures that definitely got a tick from me was this, a mighty Djinn of sorts. The pose is fantastic and very dominating, perfect for an expanded battlefield.

Again, the colour choices here are fantastic and it's nice to see how a particular theme has been carried through the army as a whole. From mighty monsters to the smaller heroes, there is this unifying blue which links the army up and means that however different the miniatures might be, they all feel part of the whole. A wonderful piece that has been shaded, detailed and finished really well.

One of the latest posts also caught my eye. A terrifying Cyclops is stomping forth from his domain to do battle. I am getting all of the Sinbad-esque vibes from this fellow and again, the painting is great. The impressive work on the fur is well worth taking a closer look in particular.

I might be going down the route of using some of the techniques on show here for my own miniatures. I'm currently in quite the Sword & Sorcery mood and enjoying the idea of painting up dusty, desert battlefields where skeletons and other monsters hunt down mighty heroes. So, a lot of the miniatures here are very much getting me excited to get deeper into that!

It is well worth exploring more of the project above as well since it contains a whole host of different miniatures including additional monsters, terrain, artillery and more.

Transylvanian Mob by zoidpinhead

Next up, we're heading back to Castle Fier with more miniatures getting painted up for The Silver Bayonet. This time, the work is by zoidpinhead who has been painting up a Transylvanian Mob that is looking to burn and slay the monsters that are knocking at their door.

The miniatures come from Gothic Wars and take your adventures in The Silver Bayonet back to 1850. There are fifteen to twenty different miniatures that have been picked up by zoidpinhead and they are getting broken down into warband members, hangers-on and everyone else in between.

This seems like a perfect period to set a zealous campaign of monster hunting and witch burning. The miniatures were painted up with a selection of Speedpaints for the most part and I think that these West Wind miniatures really stand up!

What was also nice to see was that they needed to get stuck into a monster that this warband of villagers might be hunting down. So, they turned to Mierce Miniatures and this creature, the Blood-Maw.

The painting is obviously very different on this particular miniature, especially compared to the warband of zealous and torch-wielding killers. It has still come together exceptionally well and I love how the darker skin gives way to that red maw that is filled with rows of terrible teeth. It looks all the more impressive with the wintery base which helps to frame the miniature.

This is a great start to this project and I am hoping that we get to see loads more miniatures popping up from zoidpinhead as this exploration of Transylvania continues. I am eagerly awaiting more characters and of course, the various monsters that this band of miscreants are going to end up clashing with during their adventures.

Dirty Dreadnought by laughingboy

Last but not least, we had a fun experiment from laughingboy. They were given an eBay rescue from a friend and asked to give it a new paint job. So, laughingboy was able to indulge in a bit of grimdark and painted up this Dreadnought in a style befitting a future filled with only war.

The original Dreadnought was distinctly flat looking although done with a lovely, pristine white. laughingboy took that and turned it into the miniature you see here, throwing lots of dirt and grime into the equation as well as plenty of weathering. As a fan of the grimdark and painting in this way, I think the end result is awesome and really helps to ground the miniature. It no longer looks like a toy!

Whilst the Dreadnought was painted up on stream, laughingboy also put together a shorter video where they broke down the steps and showed off how this miniature came to life. I really liked the weathering and dirty around the legs in particular. It looks like the walker has actually been in a warzone, trudging across some distant alien world.

One of the nice things about painting in the grimdark is that you can go to extremes. You don't need to be massively careful and you can turn a lot of "mistakes" into purposeful additions to your storytelling. You also have to indulge in a bit of moderating yourself too though and I like how laughingboy has done enough here to reinforce the theme without going overboard. The different colours still show through and you get a sense of realistic gore and grime on the miniature rather than simply mud for the sake of mud.
