Ice And Shadow! New Two-Player Starter Set For Kings Of War
June 19, 2023 by brennon
Mantic Games have made a new Two-Player Starter Set available featuring both the mighty Northern Alliance and the Nightstalkers. Ice And Shadow offers up a great way for you to dive into playing the 28mm wargame, Kings Of War for you and a friend.
Ice And Shadow: Two-Player Starter Set // Kings Of War
The set comes with two full armies for you to start playing the game. On the Northern Alliance side, you get plastic Tribesmen, Ice Kin Hunters/Half-Elf Berserkers and Frostclaw Riders. They are led by a resin Thegn miniature. On the Nightstalkers side of things, you have the plastic Reapers/Tormentors, Scarecrows/Doppelgangers and Butchers/Ravagers. They are led by another resin miniature, the Banshee.

The set also comes with a variety of bases for you to mount your units on and a softback Kings Of War 3rd Edition Compendium. Kings Of War is a great game to bring to the tabletop if you're seeking to play quick and easy Fantasy wargames with a mass battle feel. You could easily go down the Ambush route with these armies or dive in and get stuck into some full-on games of Kings Of War if you prefer.
This also gives you a chance to replay a bit of the narrative going on in Pannithor too...
"During the Abyssal Dwarf invasion of Chill, they bought with them wicked contraptions of Twilight Kin making known as void-cages. These devices, once opened, create rips in the fabric of reality and connect the mortal world to the Void, birthing Nightstalker horrors into reality. Relive the battle for Chill, as the Nightstalker presence threatens to turn the tide in the favour of evil."
I reckon that a lot of folks might end up picking this up. The Northern Alliance seem like a great army to paint up if you're eager to dive into some barbarian action and the Nighstalkers feel like they'd be brilliant to paint with Contrasts so you can have fun with wet blending.
Are you going to be picking Ice And Shadow up?

Great looking box to get people into this game with a friend.
not sure if I will get it as I have a ton of nightstalkers and clansmen for the NA already. I’ll definitely be grabbing all the ambush sets though for the new Ice kin and the frost chickens.
But if you’re not already a player that starter set is fantastic value it’s about £160 of retail kits and the rulebook in there for half that, or if you get from a discounter online it’s close to a third of the cost.
And a lot cheaper than similar GW offerings…
Makes for a very good starter set. Only the ruins seem randomly thrown in and modestly sized. Northern Alliance is coming along nicely too.
