Warhammer 40,000 Leviathan Launch Box Revealed!
May 1, 2023 by brennon
Unless you've been living under a particularly large rock, you will probably have heard that there is a new edition of Warhammer 40,000 dropping later this year. Warhammer 40,000 10th Edition is on the cards for the Summer and with it a new Launch Box called Leviathan where Tyranids are clashing with Space Marines.

The new set is going to be the place to get your hands on the Rulebook alongside a host of new miniatures for both the Space Marines and Tyranids of Warhammer 40,000. When the reveals dropped, I was immediately taken by the new Tyranid miniatures. I've always flirted with the idea of collecting an army of deadly, ravening aliens and this boxed set might just push me over the edge.
New Tyranid Miniatures
Leading the way for the Tyranids is the Winged Tyranid Prime which is going to be swooping across the battlefield looking to scythe you into little pieces. Those wings are going to allow it to get right into the heart of the action, avoiding the gunfire from your opponent with ease.

If you're looking to reduce the minds of your enemies to a runny liquid that leaks out of their ears, you might also want to call on the psychic might of the Neurotyrant. This focal node is there to reduce enemy psykers to a gibbering mess.

The miniature also looks incredibly awesome and I absolutely love the utter terror that this radiates. Imagine seeing this seething mass of pulsing brains and tentacles hovering towards you across the battlefield. I like that it comes with a pair of "Wi-Fi boosters" as well!
One of the heavy hitters for the Tyranids though and a creature that got a proper glow-up is the Screamer-Killer. This variant of the Carnifex is going to rampage across the battlefield, cutting through everything in its path. Anything that remains gets melted by the bio-plasma that it shoots from its maw.

There are big beasties by the bucketload for you to choose from amongst the Tyranids but there are also plenty of miniatures making up the "swarm" element of the Tyranid Hive Fleet. For example, if you want to sneak through the shadows and strike at the unaware, you have Von Ryan's Leapers.
Von Ryan's Leapers // Warhammer 40,000
We saw these fellows in one of the earlier previews for Warhammer 40,000 and the new edition so we won't dwell on them too much. The same goes for the updated sculpts for the Termagants that will be forming the core of many an army. It's nice to see these classic miniatures getting an update and it's good to see that Rippers are still going to be found amongst their plastic sprues!
Termagants // Warhammer 40,000
Moving on to some of the early previews that we'd seen, we also got some new variants that will find themselves taking on particular battlefield roles. One such variant is the Neurogaunts which have been tasked with the job of protecting the synapse creatures within your brood. They will throw themselves at the enemy in an unrelenting mass if they sense that their leader creatures are being threatened.
Neurogaunts // Warhammer 40,000
You've also got the Barbgaunts which are part beast and part living gun. They are there to rain down ordnance on the battlefield and send your enemies running for cover. It looks like a Tyranid take on a rocket launcher, especially with the weapon being mounted on their shoulder.
Barbgaunts // Warhammer 40,000
Returning to big miniature, there is also another massive monster finding its way to the tabletop. The Psychophage is going to be another threat to the psykers of other armies. These creatures are going to be looking for psykers to turn into sticky goo before drawing them into their bodies.
Psychophage // Warhammer 40,000
Some very hungry-looking Tyranids for you to pick up as part of the Leviathan boxed set. Much like the Necrons of 9th Edition, the Tyranids seem to be getting themselves a proper range refresh and it will be fun to see a lot of folks diving in on the evil alien vibe!
New Space Marines!
As well as the Tyranids, the Leviathan boxed set also comes with a bunch of brand new Space Marines that have been tasked with dealing with the Tyranid threat. Leading the way is a Captain In Terminator Armour who harks back to some of the older Space Marines in the Warhammer 40,000 range.
Captain In Terminator Armour // Warhammer 40,000
This fellow strides into the heart of the action, protected by his updated and powered-up Terminator armour. One thing that should be noted about all of the Space Marines in this set, they are not tied to a specific Chapter. Whilst this fellow might have been painted as an Ultramarine, you could have him as a Dark Angel, for example, battling alongside their awakened Primarch.
The next of the miniatures now clad in Terminator armour is the new Librarian. Powered up and harnessing the powers of The Warp, this fellow might be the only way to break the synaptic control of the Tyranids over their ravening hordes.
Librarian In Terminator Armour // Warhammer 40,000
I like this fellow a lot more now that we've seen it in miniature form. I wasn't overly fussed by the miniature in the trailer but I really like what they've done here, especially with the runic marks etched into the Terminator armour. A great miniature for those that want to practise their object source lighting.
There is also the Lieutenant In Phobos Armour. This chap seems like he has been fighting behind enemy lines for a long time, armed with his huge Space Marine-sized knives and that new combi-bolter.
Lieutenant In Phobos Armour // Warhammer 40,000
It will be interesting to see whether or not this fellow is actually able to stand toe-to-toe with the Tyranids in close combat. Power Armour only stops so many rending teeth and utterly terrifying scything talons.
We also have somewhat of a medic that might be quite handy when it comes to battling in the grimdark future. Clad in Gravis armour, this fellow has been tasked with watching over his fellow Battle-Brothers but also retrieving biological remains so that the Space Marines can get the upper hand on their enemies.
Apothecary Biologis //Warhammer 40,000
The Gravis armour should end up being able to keep him alive for a little bit longer. I can see all manner of fun scenarios coming out where you have to protect this fellow as he dives deep into the heart of a Tyranid nest, seeking out the right genetic material that the Chapter needs in order to combat their new foes.
When it comes to new troops, the Space Marines have decided to embrace more specialists. One such squad is the Infernus Squad which has decided why bring one flamethrower to a barbeque when you could bring five?
Infernus Squad // Warhammer 40,000
Their Pyreblasters are ready to turn Tyranids into toasty piles of ash. Swarms are terrible to deal with if you've got precision weapons so you are going to need to break out the Blast weapons and the Flamers in order to keep the masses of aliens at bay.
Getting more elite, there are also veterans of the Chapter in the form of these Sternguard. Drawn from the 1st Company of whatever Chapter you choose to paint them as, they have been armed with some of the best weapons available in order to combat some of the deadliest threats.
Sternguard Veteran Squad // Warhammer 40,000
You can also call on the might of the new Terminators. Clad in ancient armour that has seen many, many battles, these warriors will form the bulwark of your force. I really like that the classic Terminator style has been retained for these miniatures and they have simply been updated in terms of scale to match the Primaris.
Terminator Squad // Warhammer 40,000
A brilliant set of new Space Marines for those who enjoy their Power Armour in a variety of different flavours. All in all, a fairly hefty collection of miniatures that will be handy for battling the Tyranids on the tabletop as part of the Leviathan boxed set.
Capping things off, there is also the Ballistus Dreadnought that takes cues from the older style of Dreadnought. The classic missile launcher and lascannon combination is there but with the legs and body of the new Dreadnought that you'll have seen with the Brutalis and Redemptor.
Ballistus Dreadnought // Warhammer 40,000
Some seriously cool new miniatures for you to dive into. All new miniatures, in plastic (obviously) for both the Space Marines and the Tyranids. What's also quite cool is that the contents of this box can be used to make two Combat Patrols so if you're new to Warhammer 40,000, you can start having fun with the slimmed-down version of the game straight out of the box. THEN, you can dive into the full games with the Rulebook contained within the set and the rest of the accessories.
Warhammer 40,000 - What's Next?
With the launch of Leviathan, there will also be a new Core Book, a Crusade book focused on the Tyrannic War, a full Mission Deck and all of the Index Cards for the existing armies. Games Workshop have mentioned that the Index Cards and such should be fairly cheap but we shall see what they mean by that! At least the digital versions will be free.
Codex Roadmap // Warhammer 40,000
From there, you've got a couple of months of absolute bliss where everyone is on a level playing field. Then, Codexes drop for Space Marines and Tyranids followed by Adeptus Mechanicus and Necrons this year.
Could you be tempted to dive into Warhammer 40,000 10th Edition when it arrives later this year?

As a non GW buyer but their paints, I do like the contents of the box and been following people on youtube showing off the new data cards, and its nice to not have non stop text to read filling the whole card like 9th etc. Crisp and clean and I do look forward to watching how it plays to 9th. I also liked the trailer movie trailer they showed some weeks again and how what they showed is what is in the box, I wonder if they done that before, but its nice to see your figures “live and… Read more »
GW being GW, I doubt it will be the end but at least with the free rules (to begin with) it will be worth giving it a go.
As for being sold out, I would guess this is going to be Made To Order so that you get in there and eventually snag your box. It will then be replaced by the three-tier Starter Set system that they have used in the past I would guess.
The new winged tyranid reminded me of the flying resident evil beast in the film’s.
I misread the topic as lunch box and now I’m disappointed that there is no lunch to be had.
I must go hungry.
(Though I might argue something with ‘nids inside is a lunch box of sorts…)
GW has leaked the price thanks to a prize giveaway of Leviathan, so it’s going be £150… pretty much what I expected.
As it contains Tyranids and Space Marines… two armies I have no interest in… it’s not on my shopping list.
While I agree with you to some extent the access to the rules, datacards, transfers etc. all in one convenient package is a big appeal, I’ll likely just sell the sprues on or if I can get my nieces and nephews into 40k give them to them as a starter army each.
Screamer-Killer… someone from the naming dept ran out of ideas on that Friday lol, im surprised it doesn’t have a -4000 after it to bring out the full cliche
im liking the look to all the Tyranids, the only one that’s minorly jarring is the big old spider looking one, Psychophage, not a style I would have associated with the Tyranids before
Screamer killer is a very old name. When they phoned that one in it was wired to the wall ?
I’ve had the demo today and it’s a cracking model (cracking open my partner’s Dreadnought in particular as it went).
I think the Psychophage is taking its cues from the larger Hierophant Bio-Titan model on Forgeworld to some extent, it’s got a similar sort of profile, and the gob is clearly inspired by the Haruspex, I think overall it’s a good blend of the two and does a good job of showing the how the narrative has progressed with the Hive Mind “evolving” to bring new threats to bear, I’ll imagine your feelings on the Psychophage were shared by many when the Haruspex came out given how it’s different it was from the then range of Nids.
That’s the classic name of the original metal model which had a much bigger… jaw shall we say.
Oh someone already said this lol
thanks to those that highlight the screamer-killer name is a classic name… if im honest, my opinion is still the same, it was a last thing on Friday name before clocking off for the pub…
‘what does it do?’ kill stuff
‘what noise does it make?’ I dunno, screams a lot…
‘ok cool… we shall call it the Screamer-Killer… done, who’s for a pint?’
Love the look of the updated Screamer Killer – something of The Predator in its face and the way the chitin looks almost like predator dreads.
Some nice stuff but .. the marines… oh dear oh dear! The INTERNS, again, being given the job of updating the Marines because GW know they don’t need to put effort into Marines as they sell no matter what. The resin and firstborn Sternguards are works of art, each of your veterans are unique individuals you can pour your love into and make sure they stand out from the rank and file…. these Upscaled “Primaris” Sternguard, oh wow, they literally just took the Bladeguard CAD files and changed them around a bit. No effort at all. The terminators are good… Read more »
I just can’t justify buying AAALLLL the same books AAALLLL over again when we hardly got any plays out of 9th due to Covid. Nope not gonna.
