    ### Start of shameless copy and paste ###

First time visitor to OTT? Then please introduce yourself in the New Member Thread and look around in the Project System. Then come back and read on…

    https://www.beastsofwar.com/forums/topic/introduce-yourselves-new-member-thread/

    https://www.beastsofwar.com/project/

Read all of this before you start as it will save you any trouble later.

First thing you must do is make your “pledge”. It can be anything gaming related, big or small, and you don’t even have to finish it. No, in here, happiness is the road. Have fun doing whatever it is, but it is not a race. Accompany your work with pictures or we might think you are do something sinister and just using us for cover.

You are also presented with a few questions. It is to get the conversation started. Try and keep your answers ‘conversational’, no text speak, and certainly no “basically”. This is how we all get to know each other better. While you are here feel free to tell us a story, show a picture, joke, tales of love or woe, or just add your own little bit. This is the whole point…in here it is just us.

If you have never taken part before we may bark and bite, but we also like a cuddle! It is all done in the best possible taste and it is character building. feel free to give as good as you get.

A few other things to note: NO RELIGION & NO POLITICS! Glasgow pub rules are in effect. If you need to make a better point then it is fine, but don’t take the piss. And always keep it civil.

Play plenty of music to go with your work. Loud and through proper speakers. Write us a playlist of things we might not have heard before.

Now, after all of that there is only one ‘real’ rule in here and it cannot be broken: NO DICKS! (Exceptions may be made for little fighting men with little plastic/resin/metal wieners)

And don’t forget the highlights of the weekend: The Weekender on Friday and XLBS on Sunday. And the little show that is the unofficial Hobby Hangout over at twitch.tv

    ### End of shameless copy and paste ###

    Questions:

    • Out of the comfort zone – most of us have a certain type of game or aera in time we like to game in. Which on is yours and what would it take to dip your toes in something completly different?
    • Out of focus – how much love and attention to you apply to taking pictures of your finished minis and terrain?
    • Out of bounds – have you had anything gaming related that made you (almost) flip the table? Insane rules or rule changes, units or even opponents?

And now back to the show.

Pledge: To do some hobby after I now have finished my Arcee from Wizkids. There is still enough on and around the table for weeks. (Months at my pace)

    Answers:

    • I think something like 6mm or 10mm dark ages or high fantasy though that is hard to just “grab from a shelf” around here and I really don’t like to buy new stuff just based on images on the internet. WW2 and newer “real conflicts” are completely of the radar for me. No interest in that whatsoever. Way to real in my book.
    • I make sure I have some decent light and the mini is in focus. And if I’m really proud of a paintjob I make scenic pictures.
    • A player on an X-Wing tournament complained about the mats not being absolutely square. They were off by 5mm on one side and that way “he couldn’t play properly” (read: his automated math manoeuvrers would do it here so he’d actually hat to THINK and PLAY) Cunt.

Music! Still stuck on some tracks the one horatio has been implanting in my brain so you will suffer now too!

For me, sci-fi themed stuff is just not inspiring at all. I like a lot of bright, bold colour in my painting and I don’t feel as though that would work hugely well if I tried sci-fi. It took my partner, Darren’s, love of all things spaceshippy to give it a go and create a Stargrave warband. I never take things too seriously, so my leader was a big brain in a jar, and I had K9s and stuff in there too. A couple that looked a bit like Bender. It was fun but still not really my thing.

I have a proper camera and actually count photography as a hobby, but I cannot take a decent photo of a mini no matter how hard I try. In real life they look great, on photos they look like a chimp painted them with Tippex. The struggle is real.

Nah, if people are being jerks I just don’t play with them again. Bad rules get replaced with house rules.

    That’s Walter the Wobot! 8)

    I have a proper camera

There’s your problem! Very good pictures show flaws and imperfections you don’t see with your normal eye. Ever since I’ve started using a magnifying lamp for painting I find spots and mistakes that I just never would have seen otherwise

I’ll have to try and clean up my phone camera lens. I got superglue on it so every photo comes out with a bit of a hazy blur lol.

Fantasy is the genre I do most. SF is runner up. Not fond of post apocalyptic…

But my krytonite is zombies and vampires… TV and movies do them so much… Zombies are just gore and vampires are over glamourised… they don’t twinkle… they are bloodthirsty murderers!

Don’t take photos of my minis as my work not good enough for close scrutiny. Still own a 35 mm SLR camera that I seldom get chance to use… but I do prefer it to digital as it forces you to compose a picture and work out the exposure… digital… especially phones… are the shotgun equivalent of photography… take enough shots and you’re bound to get a hit… but no skill required.

I’ve never flipped the table… but I’ve come close when a player was being a total dick… anyway… it’s usually my table with my minis on it, so I’d have to clean up and risk destroying my own stuff.

@bexx I hope your lens survives that

@pagan8th are you saying all those nice pictures people take on their mobile phones are you lucky shots? 😉

Happy Sunday every one. So far the day has been nicely relaxed. No hobby thing has been done other than watching the XLBS and some YouTube videos. Chilli is slow cooking in the kitchen for some time now.

    How is your Sunday everybody?

@sundancer more luck than skill probably… or with a bit of editting.

Wednesday came and went and I was in bed very early.

Today is Thursday and I am looking forward to old @warbossd stream. There is a stream isn’t it?

Wow. It’s Thursday before I even realised I’ve not visited the site yet this week – been busy with work and music and learning about AI-based object detection. But I bought some more paints this week, so that counts as hobby, right?

Today’s pledge – I guess I’ve less than 48 hours to rebase some of my minis (I tried @warzan ‘s approach of making the bases the cool bit on the mini, but they always disappoint – I finally stopped hating my own painting style, only to completely ruin a “nicely” painted mini with some terrible basing. So now I do as my new painting hero MiniatureHobbyist https://www.youtube.com/@MiniatureHobbyist does – and use clear bases!)

Out of the comfort zone – most of us have a certain type of game or area in time we like to game in. Which on is yours and what would it take to dip your toes in something completely different?

I like sci-fi and cyberpunk settings. I’ve played a few zombie games and enjoyed them. I quite like Gaslands which was quite a departure from my “usual” gaming. But I just can’t get onboard with fantasy. So I try new things – but there are some things I just won’t go near!

Out of focus – how much love and attention to you apply to taking pictures of your finished minis and terrain?

I’ve taken photos and have been pleased with the results. I’ve also seen some minis I thought I’d painted well look like horror shows in photos! Photos really don’t do minis justice – if you’re not sure, try resizing your 12MP image to 500 x 500. Looks a lot better now, doesn’t it? 😉

Out of bounds – have you had anything gaming related that made you (almost) flip the table? Insane rules or rule changes, units or even opponents?

Nah. I once lost it when I caught my sister cheating at Cluedo. I’m one of those “what’s the point?” players? Winning is the least important part of playing a game for me. But that wasn’t the game’s fault!

    Here’s your music.
Remember the Black Crowes? Here’s Chris Robinson.

Spending money always counts. Also, yes it’s almost Friday!

    Friday.

Since the team is off to the pub Salute and there is no Weekender or XLBS I say we take this thread into next week.

    Objections?
