CATAN was first released in 1995 and won and was nominated for a whole host of awards throughout the years until 2012. As well as the base game becoming the introduction to many people's hobby board gaming life, the simple but elegant mechanics of the game spawned all manner of expansions and twists on the original format.
Here is the announcement from CATAN Studio...

It's sad to see one of the big names in the board gaming industry pass away but I'm sure that plenty of people will be breaking out their copies of CATAN to give the game another go over the next few days. Get stuck into a bit of trading and jockeying for control over a faraway island and embrace his classic board game one evening soon.
Do you remember sitting down to play CATAN for the first time?
