Lone Wolf Gamebook Series Returns With Definitive Edition
February 28, 2023 by brennon
Joe Dever’s amazing Lone Wolf Gamebook Series is returning with a new Definitive Edition of the series. Featuring stunning new cover art but retaining the brilliant art by Gary Chalk within, the new set of releases will give folks another chance into this thirty-two-book series and see it reach a conclusion in 2024.
Flight From The Dark // Lone Wolf
Similar to the likes of the Fighting Fantasy series, the Lone Wolf books allow you to take on the role of a heroic adventurer, delving into the world of Magnamund as one of the Kai Lords and their allies. The first five books for the new Definitive Edition of the series are available now with books six and seven becoming available in May.
Fire On The Water // Lone Wolf
The original author of the series, Joe Dever, passed away in 2016 and it was his final wish that his son Ben would complete the rest of the books in the series. Well, that is becoming a reality and as mentioned earlier, the final book in the series will be coming out, capping off this epic journey through the lands of Magnamund.
The Caverns Of Kalte // Lone Wolf
One of the nice things about the Lone Wolf series is that you can dive into each book and simply play them out as individual adventures or you can take it as the jumping-off point into an absolutely epic campaign that spans the entire series. I only ever played through the first book in the series, Flight From The Dark, but it was a lot of fun and I really enjoyed the writing.
From my experience, it felt a little more forgiving than the Fighting Fantasy series and it was nice to have more of a focus when it came to the narrative. I might use this new set of books as a way to dive back into the series and play through the adventures properly.
Lone Wolf - The Miniatures Game
As well as the new versions of the Gamebooks for you to enjoy diving into, the team behind Lone Wolf and Stone Sword Games have announced that they are going to be working on the new Lone Wolf: The Miniatures Game that will hit Kickstarter in the Spring.
Lone Wolf: The Miniatures Game // Stone Sword Games
Designed to be played solo or cooperatively, this is going to be another way to dive into the world of Magnamund and experience some epic sagas. Join the battle between Lone Wolf and Archlord Zagarna or struggle back to Toran after the fall of the Kai Monastery. You'll be able to see those stories come to life in a different way than you have before.
As you might have guessed, with the subtitle "Miniatures Game", you would expect that we're going to be seeing some. Well, there are already a few previews and renders online.
Lone Wolf: The Miniatures Game - Miniatures // Stone Sword Games
Miniatures are going to be brought to life for the likes of the Kai Lords, their allies and enemies like Giaks, Drakkarim and the forces of Naar. If you're interested in the pedigree of Stone Sword Games, they have previously worked on Senjutsu: Battle For Japan and one of our favourites, Hogs Of War: The Miniatures Game.
Watch out for the Kickstarter landing around April and remember to dive in and check out the book series if you've not done so before.
Will you be returning to Lone Wolf and Magnamund?

I remember seeing these as a nipper but I don’t think I picked any up. A 32 book series is seriously tempting though.
I’ve (re)collecting the books as the definitive editions are released. Whilst I had a few Fighting Fantasy books, Lone Wolf were the gamebooks I really loved. It is great to see them being published again.
The Fighting Fantasy books were more like a spider diagram. The Lone Wolf books were more like a flow chart where you could use multiple solutions for problems instead of there only being one correct method and with options to get back on track if you’d been derailed (instead of being stuck on the wrong path).
Lone Wolf always brings back fond memories. And miniatures too! This is pretty much an auto back for me.
I saw the new definitive editions at Fighting Fantasy Fest last year and they looked really good! Unfortunately I’d already spent most of my money on Atlantis Miniatures so I could only afford a replica Lone Wolf tee-shirt (exactly like the old one from the 80’s that I never managed to afford back in the day).
I picked up the first three in paperback late last year. I did get the hardback first and although it’s such a nice volume it would be expensive to get them all in hardback hence the paperbacks.
Going to wait and see how the board game goes though.
Crucial miniatures game questions. Do you ‘roll’ by squinting/closing your eyes and then dangling a pencil over the random numbers tabld, like in the books?
And how many ‘take backsies’ do you have if you make a wrong choice and end up dying?
standard book rules, take backsies are based on the number of pages you can hold open with one hand so generally three unless you can stick your thumb in for a cheeky fourth
Not just me!
I have actually started the whole gamebook series again with my early 90s paperback collection. Already in the mid of book 5 and having the same fun as 30 years ago. Unfortunately I have just first 12 books.
The boardgame is big surprise! I hope it will be great.
