Swedish Army by FOGH

We start with some new work from FOGH who has been tinkering away on an army for the new year. Exploring more of Pike & Shotte with a range of miniatures, they have been building up an excellent Swedish Army themed around the early 17th Century and the period around 1620 through to 1630.

What's awesome about the miniatures that we're seeing here from FOGH is that it starts to explore time periods and conflicts that I've never really heard of before. The project from FOGH is properly packed with information that explores the miniatures and the hobby side of things but also tells the history of the faction. In this case, it's all about yellow and why this was picked in particular for the Swedish army.

It's really fun exploring the collection and reading more about the characters and troops that make up this force. From a hobby point of view, it's also fun to see what troops and additional accessories are being added into the mix. For example, you've got this poor fellow who has been shot! I do like a good casualty marker that takes the place of a dice or something that breaks the immersion on the tabletop.

As well as the troops, we also have the new cavalry options that have been added into the mix by this project. It takes some real effort to get all of those different chaps painted up in a variety of colours and so it's cool seeing them all together and the pageantry of the whole affair.

FOGH projects are always filled with awesome information when it comes to getting into a particular period and a conflict. So, make sure to go and have a look at it as I'm sure this isn't going to be the only bit of awesomeness we have to sink our teeth into when it comes to this growing Swedish army.

Beren & Luthien Diorama by thedace

The next of the projects we're looking at is an impressive one from thedace. They have been inspired to dive into a little bit of Middle-earth recently and that meant constructing a fascinating diorama based around two characters from the expanded legendarium. We're going back to the First Age and the tale of Beren & Luthien.

The miniatures for Beren and Luthien came from Dark Sword and North Star Military Figures and represent the two of them rushing through the woods after taking one of the Silmaril from the crown of Morgoth. However, as you can see here, the great wolf known as Carcharoth, mad from the fire of the Silmaril in his belly, is hunting through the woodlands.

There is a distinct lack of First Age miniatures out there in the world and so it's awesome to see thedace doing a little bit of research and putting together such a dynamic and interesting diorama. I love that thedace has managed to capture both of the characters really nicely and put together such a wonderful piece of terrain alongside the characters. The attention to detail is also great in that Beren is without his hand!

There are also some wonderful touches added to the diorama in places that speak of the author of this tale. A recreation of Tolkien's grave is in the background marked with the words that he had on it as when he was interned with his wife. They were there very own Beren and Luthien.

It's an awesome idea and certainly helps to add to the diorama as a whole. Taking things to the next level, you've also got the addition of the Simbelmynë that you might remember grows on the graves of the dead in Rohan. Such wonderful attention to detail and it really, really makes me want to dive into some First Age hobby.

USMC Tanks & Troops by miniaturebrushwork

Last but not least, we have some more Historical goodness from miniaturebrushwork. Here we have some of the USMC in 15mm and that means infantry and vehicles!

miniaturebrushwork has done some very good "brushwork" as you can see here and got the camouflage and little details just right. You immediately get the vibe of who these soldiers are and where they are fighting. There is something exceedingly pleasing about painting up smaller-scale miniatures and seeing that they still properly pop!

My favourite miniatures from the recent set of posts though are the tanks. I absolutely love this M1 that is rolling in and getting ready to blast folks away. The little bits of battle damage and weathering here and there really sell it. Oh, and the cooler on the turret.

You've also got these transports for making sure that the USMC get to where they need to be. Again, the weathering and extra detail on these miniatures is what properly sells them and when paired with some beautiful terrain, you would be hard-pressed not to enjoy the spectacle on the tabletop.

There are some excellent miniatures as part of this project and I'm aways up for a bit of Modern Warfare on the tabletop. World War II is great but there's something neat about the almost Near-Future elements of modern armies that take things to the next level. What do you think?
