Operation Cheltenham by bobcockayne

We start off this week's Community Spotlight with the coming of a Battle Report. All to make Gerry happy. This time around, we're looking at what bobcockayne has been up to as they have set up an impressive World War II battle using Flames Of War called Operation Cheltenham.

A lot of work has gone into bringing this all together including the crafting of the armies and different elements of terrain. This is all set up inside a permanent gaming room now as well which is good because even though they dived into this, the game didn't get finished. So, there is no worry about coming back to this and giving it another shot.

The pictures that have come out of this project are bloomin' awesome and I love that there are so many excellent snapshots of the game up close and from wide angles too. It gives you a good sense of how the battle is playing out and you can also zero in on some of the more heroic "Hollywood" moments as different troops look to kick ass and take names.

The entire project has been something of a labour of love and it features a good breakdown of painting the different miniatures as well as setting up the scenario. That's all without talking about the actual battle report itself which is covered in some fairly hefty detail. It's a fun read and worth delving into.

The game actually uses a little modification to the standard Flames Of War rules. If you're interested in finding out the tweaks and why it's worth having a look at the project. I think the changes help rather than hinder, especially with such a big game being played out.

Malifaux by DefectiveDice

Next, we're looking at the work by DefectiveDice on their continued Malifaux collection. They have been doing a lot of good work on painting up more Malifaux masters and their hangers-on. I am still in love with the characters and the options that you get for painting quirky miniatures.

Some fun miniatures here like Ophelia have been painted up recently and I like that you get such a nice look at the character on display with DefectiveDice's painting. The bonus is also seeing the brilliant basing that they do on their miniatures. All of the basing is thematic and works well with the miniatures and factions in question.

Another of the fun miniatures is Sly here. He comes with a good selection of different weapons to use when he's battling on the tabletop. I like the idea that he wheels that cart into town and then pops it open, ready to gun down anyone who gets in his way. The painting, again, is great and I really like the choice of that old British steam train-like green.

DefectiveDice doesn't stop when it comes to painting Malifaux miniatures as you can see from the image above. I love the way that they have painted up the various elemental effects on these miniatures. The chap on the left in that swirling mist is just amazing and I think the effect is spot-on up close and from far away. Also that creature in the middle; that is an elemental I'd want on my side.

Old Skool Miniatures by dynarod1164

Last but not least for this week, we're looking at the work of dynarod1164 who has been working away on a great set of old-school miniatures from their collection. They have been using the last little while to paint up a lot of the miniatures in their collection using good old Speedpaints.

There is a really fun selection of miniatures to choose from in this collection. They range from classic Dragons to might Elves and Dwarves. I would imagine that Gerry can probably pick out exactly where these miniatures have come from!

The Speedpaint looks like it has done a super good job on the miniatures and I think it works very well for these older miniatures. The older miniatures are still detailed but they tend to have large sections of their model which can be done by simply block painting your way to victory. I think using the likes of Speedpaint and Contrast is the way forward for these older ranges.

They even went to great lengths to make sure everything was based on squares. Oh, and they worked on some Dwarves for me which is very nice of them. I think these miniatures look great and using the new year as a way to get your backlog finished is a great way to go. Some solid work here.
