The White Council & Radagast On Eagle Spotted For The Hobbit
January 19, 2015 by brennon
You heard the news that The White Council & Radagast on Eagle were coming and a lot of Middle-Earth fans love that Games Workshop haven't totally given up on The Hobbit as a franchise. Well, a preview of what's coming to pre-order hit the internet HERE...
First up is Radagast the Brown on his Great Eagle that he's ridden to the battlefield outside Erebor alongside Beorn too. If you've seen the movie you might still be sad that they weren't on screen for very long but needless to say you have him on the tabletop.
Radagast is presented with his legs around the Eagles neck and he's holding on tight to both his hat and the Eagles feathers. It's nothing too special but it certainly fills in the section from the Battle of Fives Armies supplement.
The films version of The White Council is also getting a new boxed set. In this set you get Elrond in full armour ready to strike out with his sword and while he looks like he's dashing forward it could be mistaken for tripping up on himself.
Next up is Galadriel in her "I'm rather annoyed" get-up. She looks like some wild Elf spirit from the woodlands and while certainly quite cool looking in the sculpt of her outfit she doesn't quite look as dominating or indeed serene as her past incarnations have been. You can get versions of Galadriel in metal from the old Lord of the Rings range that look better.
Last but not least is Saruman who was utterly bad ass in the film. He's presented swirling round with his staff in hand but the paint job does nothing to add to the action or sense of motion. It looks like a WizKids figure in all actuality. Sadly the angle is a bit iffy so you can't really make out the full sculpt but hopefully it's just the paint jobs hurting the way they look.
We'll no doubt see some better images towards the end of the week and Friday will be pre-order day. So, if you are holding out for more from The Hobbit there's plenty to look out for.
Bring on Ram Cavalry, weird Feral Orcs and more from Battle of the Five Armies.
What do you think of them?

I like those…
NO SPOILER ALERT some people may no have seen the film? like me ho hum
Sounds good that GW are still trying to make a go of the films games wise.
I have over 500 LoTR SBG miniatures that I collected since the game began in 2001. From the hobbit range, I only bought the Escape from Goblin town box set but never did anything with it. I thought GW not including full game rules for the models included on the box was totally greedy at the time. While I also liked some of the models so far from the hobbit range, the prices are far far too excessive compared to LoTR SBG prices. Having said all that, I’m hoping Dain Ironfoot will get a miniature release as Billy Connoly was… Read more »
They seem fairly nice, keen to see the Galadriel model in better detail. Sadly I think these will be the last hobbit release as nothing else was listed in the battle of five armies supplement.
I do feel, that a combination of to my view a poor launch strategy, the changes from 2-3 films and the Perrys leaving limited GW’s handling which I feel was completely lacklustre. Would love to be proven wrong with Dain and new dwarfs, plus some of those funky Gunabad orcs – plastics of course.
They don’t look all that special. Who’s willing to bet that the council box set will be close to $100 like the last version was?
Price have already been leaked;

We have seen much better sculpts for most of those before this.
I am not the biggest fan of GW in general, but it seems to me both the write-up above and the comments below are unduly harsh and critical, given the poor quality of the photographs. Clearly, the bend in the page on the lower image (you can see how convex it is), is causing distortion of the models themselves. Whoever took the pics made the rookie mistake of using his flash, as well, so all the color and contrast is blasted away entirely here. Honestly, these are photographs of flat pictures taken by a camera phone with an unnecessary flash… Read more »
We’ll see on Friday when the full release pops up and we can take another look at the models. As it stands this is what we have and while the photos are bad you can still clearly make out a lot of the miniatures and how they’re going to look on the tabletop.
I’ve however learned (and mentioned it above) that the paint jobs they give these miniatures actually do them no favours and they look ten times better in the resin/plastic with someone else doing the brushwork.
So, we shall see on Friday.
I think it is in part because paint quality and mini quality in some instances have been poor in general for the hobbit, so it has sadly become the expectation. As for my comment on the GW support lacklustre is as kind a phrasing as I can manage.
We shall as @brennon said see Friday
Probably for the movie fans, I personally don’t see anything special.
The main question remaining is: when does the GW’s contract with New Line expire? Because when it does, GW will drop the game as fast as you drop a hot coal, IMHO.
2017 is the year that’s usually given. I wasn’t able to find anything official confirming that when I was looking into in. There is a press release from New Line in 2011 confirming that the six-year agreement from 2005-2011 had been renewed. If there are two more years left on the license, it would be very surprising if GW weren’t obliged to release at least some new product in that time.
Meh. But I could be wrong… I’ll reserve judgement till they’re released.
When the eagle lifts his head get ready to award Radagast marks out of ten for the backflip
The models don’t look too bad but will wait to see better pics.
Galadriel’s legs and feet are not well sculpted which spoils what looks to be an otherwise nice model.
You’re right. The bottom half of her kinda looks like Fred Flintsone… the attention to detail of a waning franchise.
What is going on with the studio painters at GW at the moment.
It’s Radagastly
Groan, but made me grin
