Warmachine MK4 Core Army Starter Sets Available This Week
January 12, 2023 by brennon
Privateer Press are going to be launching the release of their new Core Army Sets for Warmachine MKIV this week. Tomorrow (13th January 2023), you will be able to get your hands on the new Core Army Sets for Cygnar, Orgoth and Khador.
Cygnar Storm Legion Core Army Starter // Warmachine
The first of the sets is for the Cygnar Storm Legion and their mighty, lighting-throwing machines of war. Inside the set, you get a pretty hefty bunch of miniatures that offer up a multitude of options for army building. They are led by Captain Athena di Baro but you then get a Courser Light Warjack, Stryker Heavy Warjack, a unit of Stormblade Legionnaires, a Stormguard Legionnaires unit, two Legionnaire Standard Bearers and then a Tempest Thunderers Unit, Arcane Mechaniks Unit and finally (phew) a Legionnaire Officer Solo.

One thing to note about all of the Core Army Starter Sets that you're going to see here is that they all come with magnets. You get a Starter Magnet Pack that allows you to magnetise all of the heads and arms on your Warjacks so you don't have to mess around with buying multiples when you've just started playing.
As the new big bad of the Warmachine world, Orgoth are going to be the direct foe of Cygnar at the start of this new edition.
Orgoth Sea Raiders Core Army Starter // Warmachine
This set is led by Kishtaar, The Howling Silence and he is supported by a Jackal Light Warjack and a Tyrant Heavy Warjack. You'll also get a multitude of brutal killers in the form of the Assault Reachers, Strike Reavers, Reaver Standard Bearer, Ulkor Barrager, Warwitch Coven and Orgoth Commander Solo.

I think if I was going to be jumping on the Warmachine train for the new edition I would have to go with Orgoth. I like their style and the miniatures in general. They should be good fun to paint and in lieu of picking up the edge lord Elves that are coming down the pipeline, this is where I'd plant my flag!
Last but not least, we have the Khador set. This is Coming Soon rather than being available to buy from the 13th January but it shouldn't be far behind the Cygnar and Orgoth sets.
Khador Winter Korps Core Army Starter Set // Warmachine
Another host of fun offerings lies within. You get Kapitan Ilari Borisyuk leading the way followed by a Dire Wolf Heavy Warjack and a Great Bear Heavy Warjack. You also get two Winter Korps Infantry Units with Support Weapons plus two Winter Korps Infantry Standards. You also get one Shock Trooper Gunner Unit, one Arkanist Unit and a Winter Korps Officer Solo.

As mentioned above, the first two sets will be available to order from 13th January 2023 and come in 3D Printed Resin in line with the new process that Privateer Press are using for manufacturing. As a reminder, all of the sets also come with the magnets you need for your Warjacks.
Make sure to keep an eye on their webstore over the next couple of days and then dive into Warmachine MKIV!
Which faction would you pick?
"Which faction would you pick?"
They don’t look too bad, but from the contents I am guessing they dropped all pretense of this not being infantrymachine first?
The new edition probably emphasises warjacks more than it ever has. Since units now are much smaller and warjacks in general have access to more Focus, the result is a game where units are more vulnerable to being reduced in size and thus effectiveness. They will do a lot of work if you allow them to get into position, but losing a single model from a 3-man unit or 2 models from a 5-man unit means you can’t use them to annihilate hard targets the way you often could with a lot of buffs on a 10-man unit before. New gorgonites.?
I have a box of Orgoth on order, to try out the new version (Yes I could have used my old models but they were soooooooooo 2010s) I quite like what they are doing with the rules and the new App
BTW While I am waiting …I’d be interested in seeing an unboxing if anyone knows of a link
I like them. If these were £50 a box, or £100 for two armies to get playing they’d be great. Even £100 would be an ‘ok, I’ll try it’. But they’re asking for nearly £200. I understand you’re not paying for the material but the sculpting, transportation, packaging, the whole caboodle, and that should be returned but the value is for me to define.
Is it because these are not ‘starter armies’ but an entire army? Have Privateer Press chopped off the ‘here’s the starter set, now buy these other models for £higher-price?
Yeah, they’re trying a drastically different marketing tactic with these. Now you buy the whole army for $200. And as I understand it, they’re not going to separate out all of these units to be purchased individually.
I’m really wondering how it will go for them.
Well I can’t deny that those are nice looking boxes sets but price of those is just too high. Even GW’s Battle Forces are cheaper than those and come with more miniatures.
I often think that GW has some loss leaders in their big sets, while I think these are meant to be the way you get a Warmachine army.
It is a really radical new sales model. It might work, but it really could backfire on them as well.
I just got the Storm Legion starter and it is a quite different approach. The old starter sets often had a bunch of “dead” models; things included in the starter that don’t really make it to the main game. As far as I can see, the entire box here is “Live”: you will use the models in them in a great deal of lists, possibly with the exception of the standard bearers, who require spesific builds to be worth it.
Seeing all the unbuilt models from loss leader starters I think this is more customer friendly in the long run.
