Free League Publishing are now live on Kickstarter with their project for Andy Chamber's (Battlefleet Gothic, Necromunda) Zone Wars, a miniature skirmish wargame set in the world of Mutant: Year Zero.

The idea behind the project is to create a fast, fun and brutal skirmish game for two-to-four players. Each side will take on the role of Stalkers who are heading out into the Post-Apocalyptic world of Mutant: Year Zero in search of artefacts, territories to conquer and sometimes just the tools with which to survive.

The Core Set for the game comes with what you need to play the game with two players. You'll get the miniatures for the Ark Mutants and the Genlab Tribes, all of which are in 32mm scale. In addition to the miniatures, you'll also get character cards, artefacts, zone event and mutation cards, a full set of Year Zero dice, tokens, rulers and cardboard terrain. There is also a game mat for you to play your games on. The single-piece miniatures and everything else included in the box work nicely as you can just pop it out and start playing!

The rules for Zone Wars will be familiar to those who have played the Mutant: Year Zero roleplaying game. The game is still based on the roll of a pool of d6 dice. Successes are still hit on a six and there is the chance to "push" your roll, picking up dice that failed in order to achieve more success on a test. If you've played any of the Year Zero games then you'll be aware of the basics of this but of course, there are a few more intricacies within with the move to it being a miniatures wargame.

Download The Zone Wars Alpha Rules - Print & Play

You can download the Print & Play version of the game above. You get all of the cards, tokens and the Alpha Rules themselves. All you'll need are some miniatures from your collection to represent the different gangs.

As well as the Core Set, you can also get your hands on the Robots & Psionics Expansion which comes with two new Stalker gangs for you to play as.

You get all of the bits and pieces in this set to take things to the next level and turn your miniature mayhem into a three-of-four-player affair rather than just being a head-to-head clash. The gangs within are the Mechatron hive and the Nova Cult Psionics, drawn from more of the background for Mutant: Year Zero.

The miniatures for both sets have come from sculptors Alejandro Muñoz Martín and Daniel BlueIce and, as mentioned above, require no assembly. They have also been "sundropped" which means that they have been given a little bit of colour through a drybrushing technique in order to make them a little funkier. It shouldn't take much to get them to a higher level of finish.

Zone Wars Stretch Goals

It wouldn't be a Kickstarter without Stretch Goals and the folks at Free League have been knocking quite a few of them over.

More miniatures have been unlocked for the various factions in the game and you'll note that you've got some awesome-looking cardboard terrain as well. I really like that the campaign and the game in general seem to be focusing on providing a stepping stone from roleplaying to miniature wargaming. The pre-assembled miniatures, cardboard terrain and such all make it very easy for someone who likes Mutant: Year Zero to step over into this game and start playing with their friends.

I also really like that the game, out of the box, seems to have been designed to work well with three or four players rather than just two. It opens open the game to larger groups of friends who can all have fun together in the midst of the mayhem!

Could you be tempted by Zone Wars?
