See More Of The Votann Hernkyn Pioneers For Warhammer 40,000!
August 12, 2022 by brennon
Games Workshop has been previewing more of the Leagues Of Votann that are coming soon to Warhammer 40,000. The Hernkyn Pioneers are the focus of this week's preview, offering up the new style of "trike" to the Leagues Of Votann.

The idea behind the design of the Hernkyn Pioneers is that they have taken classic imagery of the Squats of old and tweaked them to match the more modern technology that the Votann have access to. So, rather than there being wheels on show here, we get those lifter coils. It's anti-gravity but with a more purposeful and forthright feel to it compared to the sleek designs of the Aeldari.

Being fast and manoeuvrable, the Hernkyn Pioneers are able to whizz around the battlefield, securing different objectives and laying down firepower where it's needed. My favourite of the Pioneers is the one above where there is a gun mounted on the back of it - I think it nails that look of them as proper scouting vehicles that are good at taking opportunities.

As well as the vehicles themselves, you've got the pilots themselves. With big coats and goggles, they have the look and feel of some of those older Squats but with a bit more of a modern twist to their design. It's no padded jacket but it'll do for now.

I wasn't overly impressed by the Hernkyn Pioneers, to begin with, but I think I am starting to warm to their design. I think now that we've seen a bit more of them, I am coming around to the idea of picking them up for my Leagues Of Votann army when I inevitably pick it up.
It will be interesting to see what else gets thrown into the ring for the Leagues and if they will explore more of the Squats range from the past.
Are you tempted to snap these up for your Leagues Of Votann?

Seeing all the individual previews has me slightly confused what the army as a whole is supposed to look like.
Eons Of Battle did a good photoshop showing off all of the previews to date not long ago. I was a little hesitant at first too but I am starting to come around to them as a whole with their aesthetic.
I’ll have to go and find that then. Thanks. I like the battle suits and the wheeled vehicle a lot, the rest not so much. This is not an army for me 😉
they may look cool, but that doesn’t make them dwarves 😉
as they got no beards worth a damn
It’s the biker mars from mice.
Nearly spit my coffee all over the keyboard when I read that. Perhaps a headswap with some of the Mantic’s “Space Rats” and you’d be good to go 🙂
…but yeah the DO look a bit 80’s cartoonish
Lol that’s a great idea?
Those are very nice and interesting looking.
I think these would look a lot better if you took off the hover engines, extended the front forks and added some nice, chunky tyres. Also, how do they get on them? Doesn’t look like there’s any steps or handholds to get into that cramped seat.
The same way you get 10 marines into rhino, with the power of friendship.
I keep looking out for a centrepiece model, something like the colossus or Land Train engine. A modernised steampunky armoured train would be really something. These aren’t bad, but they’re not grabbing me with a ‘must buy these’ vibe. That said, I’ve a preference for tanks so could be biased.
There’s always the Landtrain model they did for Necromunda/Ash Wastes (although it’s a fair chunk of change). Still wouldn’t be too hard to stick Squats in the turret rings and remake those “Landtrains” of old (which was one of the Squat centrepieces GW never did (although a fair few gamers scratch built their own). I think the nearest they got was the one for Epic, but that one looked a bit weird and not like the artwork
THe more I see, the less I like.
Looks like as they travel over the Battlefield, they also give it a jolly good polish as well 😀
Sorry still not getting the “vibe” with these yet. Granted they harken back to the old “Squat” Bikers of old, but they would have been so much better with WHEELS (or even as a half track). Thinking we’ll probably see more than a few kitbashes from gamers to put wheels back on these.
This is the first thing that came to my mind, as well. It looks like the big floor polisher my high school janitor used to ride around the hallways.
Meh, don’t like this hovertrike…
The Space Dwarf biker thing never worked for me even back in the day; these updated version don’t really do anything for me either.
Mantic did it WAAAAAY better…
GW seems to have forgotten what made space dwarves popular in the first place, and now it’s just a mess. Heck, even the Kharadron Overlords, who were made for fantasy, fit better as new Squats than these guys.
Nothing. The answer is nothing made them popular in the first place, there’s a reason they were the first ever army to be removed from the game by GW completely.
Hmmm. I like and don’t like at the same time. As others have commented I’m having difficulty getting the over arching aesthetic of the army.
However, maybe mixed with the Kharadron Overlords via head swaps etc would give the old school Squat feel.
