Malifaux Pigpens by defectivedice

We start off today delving into the mud and sludge with some pigs within the world of Malifaux. DefectiveDice has been tinkering around with some awesome bases that match up really nicely when it comes to working out what Ulix and his band need!

This project goes back to good old-fashioned kitbashing and bitz raiding. Loads of bits of old cast-off wood and metal have been used to make a pigsty that would be worthy of any mammoth bacon machine.

What was also fun about this particular project was seeing how that awesome mud was going to be achieved in the middle of a pigpen. Well, the answer came in the form of the Vallejo Earth Texture Paste that you see below!

This all came together to create some really awesome bases that, after a little bit of drybrushing, really look like the places where a bunch of pigs would call home. A bit of grit went in there too and it was perfect for the job.

This was a really fun little project to follow where we got to see a bit of old-school base crafting. Using a few odds and ends and some neat texture paint, the effect really pops and properly grounds this gang from Malifaux in their own backyard.

Done Is Better by brick

The next project we're looking at follows Forbidden Pslam, a solo wargame based within the world of MORK BORG. What is nice about this is that miniatures can be taken from anywhere and brick decided to use a bunch of Warcry plastics that looked the part.

The twist here was that, with the use of some washes, the collection that was needed for a game could be finished quick as anything! As the title of the project would suggest, Done Is Better Than Perfect where the aim is to get to some colour down on these miniatures, base them and then have them ready to play with.

I really like this approach. I think it's a neat way of getting a bunch of models ready for gaming. Why bother with all of the different painting steps when you can make a miniature pop with a wash or two and then introduce them to the tabletop? So many of us get hung up on painting out miniatures to a perfect standard before playing games and it stops a lot of us from gaming I reckon!

Because brick just got the paint down, they can then move on to setting up a tabletop and getting ready to play some games. Perfect in its own way.

Whilst it might take a few folks a little bit of time to come around to this particular way of viewing things, I think it's a healthy approach. This is especially the case if you want to play more games!

Spring Cleaning RISK by oneofpeace

Last but not least, we look to another ingenious idea. oneofpeace has been interested in playing some smaller-scale games and Black Powder was on their radar. Instead of picking up a bunch of miniatures that they may or may not enjoy playing games with, they found a cheap copy of RISK and decided to use the playing pieces from that!

I don't know why I've never thought of this?! oneofpeace went to the effort of splitting them up so that there were two equal armies of "Reds" and "Blues". Then came the process of batch painting them to make their armies for use in games.

Split up across bases as you see here, this enables you to put together a pretty decently-sized army for use in your games for relatively cheap. RISK comes with a lot of plastic figures and multi-basing allows you to make good use of them in a wargaming sense.

With a little bit of extra touching up and some basing material, suddenly these look just the same as pretty much any other army of the period in regular plastic or metal.

Contrast has been the friend of oneofpeace and I think it has turned out really well. Even though these might end up just being test armies, I think this is a great idea and one that should hopefully mean they can try out some games without too much of an initial outlay.
