About the Project

Inspired by Bill Making Stuff's video on 10mm magnetic game board, this will be a case for playing different types of games, (relatively cheaply) to force my friends to play what I want. Have games, can travel.

The first job after putting the cutlery out of sight and therefore all existence was replacing the hinges to get a full 180 degrees for the case to open.Looking on eBay I managed to grab a pair for £1.79 inc postage and got the bonus of giggling at them being called Butt Hinges.

I didn't order the right size but honestly, I was thinking so much about whether you would hinge a butt along the x or the y axis that I don't care.I didn't order the right size but honestly, I was thinking so much about whether you would hinge a butt along the x or the y axis that I don't care.

Inspiration and Up-Cycling

I watch a lot of Youtube.

Inspiration and Up-Cycling

One of my most watched channels is Bill Making Stuff. It is about Bill, who makes stuff. They do a lot of scratch building minis out of beads and junk but recently they put up a video called How to make a magnetic game board for 10mm wargaming.

Given last year’s conversion to 10mm fan, this was a light bulb moment for me. There are several ranges of minis in that scale that I’ve looked at but not been able to justify buying because I wasn’t sure how I’d use them but now let the capitalism roll!

Before I get too deep into the games though, first we need our travel gaming platform.

Inspiration and Up-Cycling

Joking aside, money is incredibly tight these days and hobby budget is almost non-existent for me. I had thought about trailing round the charity shops in search of a backgammon board on my next day off after payday but some part of my brain remembered this case exists.

For context, when we cleared out my dad’s place after he died a few years back, we found a hideous cutlery set and none of us knew where it came from. Truly looks like it belongs on Trump’s dining table. We kept it cos we thought it would be a good laugh to use it as a family at Christmas. I don’t think in the last five years we’ve even had a Christmas together and we certainly haven’t taken this case out of it’s hidey-hole.

Inspiration and Up-Cycling

A case is a case and up-cycling it to something fun and usable tickles my hobby hippie sensibilities. I don’t know what I’ll do with the knives and forks but that’s for future me to deal with.

Now the case is bigger than I had been expecting to use but it’s not unreasonable. Each half has inner measurements of 30cm by 43.5cm, so 60×44 roughly when fully open.

Speaking of fully open brings us to the first problem I’ll tackle. Cutlery cases are only meant to open to a 90 degree angle so I had to replace the hinges.
