It only seems like yesterday I was telling you all about the nominations for the Spiele des Jahres awards - practically the tabletop equivalent of the Game of the Year awards! The first winner has been announced from the three categories, crowning Magic Mountain the winner for the Kinderspiel des Jahres award.

The Kinderspiel des Jahres award is awarding the best child-friendly board game, Magic Mountain was up against two other awesome and diverse titles, including a wacky race of token collecting in Quacks & Co: Quedlinburg Dash from Schmidt Spiele and dice rolling for sweet goodies, Auch Schon Clever also from Schmidt Spiele.

The game was awarded in its native language, German, known as Zauberberg in its home country. 1-6 players will be trundling across uneven pathways in hopes of getting their wizard to the end goal. The pathway is reckless, with wandering witches on the same route. Players will be throwing their will-o'-the-wisp marbles in hopes of knocking their wizards one step in the right direction, matching spaces to their marbles.

As there are also witches scattered across the path, players will focus on just allowing the wizard figures to progress, however, they do not have control of that marble once it has been thrown down the hill. To win the game, players must get four sorcerers to the bottom of the hill before three witches get there first.

This game can be played solo, as the winning condition will stay the same. However, players can cooperate with up to six people which can last roughly 15 minutes. If you want a chance to pull out a fun, attractive and simple marble-throwing game with your kids (ages 5+)- no recommendation can come higher than the Kinderspiel des Jahres award!

Would you play Magic Mountain with your children?
