Community Spotlight: Zona Alfa, Eagle Dioramas & Steampunk Battles
June 29, 2022 by brennon
Come and join us for another delve into the Projects to find the best of the best from the last week or so. We're going to be getting stuck into lots of great-looking miniature wargaming painting and hobbying this week...
...make sure to always let us know what YOU have been working on and share it across the site.
Zona Alfa by nightrunner
We start off with a spotlight on a neat project from nightrunner. They have been working hard on a big collection of miniatures that are actually going to be donated to their club! The game is Zona Alfa and that means a whole bunch of awesome (and weird) miniatures.
The miniatures themselves have come from a range of different sculptors. Zona Alfa allows you to introduce all sorts of interesting miniatures into the mix, fighting for survival in a post-apocalyptic world. That means that you can play around with some absolutely excellent miniatures like the ones above.
One of the neat things about this project is that this was nightrunner's first chance to play around with Contrast and Speed paints. I think that the final look of the models is pretty awesome and the effect has worked very nicely. I always think that these speed painting methods work very nicely on organic-looking textures. It has certainly worked with those dinosaurs!
Here you can see the collection as it stands, showcasing all manner of fascinating creatures that are going to be part of this Zona Alfa collection.
I think some of the wild and wonderful bits of this collection rock. That be-tentacled beast at the back of the set is really awesome, especially with all of that bright blue and pink. It's also very neat to see all of the zombies and such that have been sorted for the project. A very nice thing to do for clubmates AND it is well worth hitting up the link above to see more of the work-in-progress painting.
Eagle Diorama by thedace
Next up, we're looking at a rather fun diorama. This one, from thedace, features an Eagle that is swooping down as a trio of guinea pigs are seeking safety amongst the undergrowth.
Dioramas have always been something I have loved looking at and this is no different. I love that they manage to capture moments in time and tell a story and can also have a bit of fun. I think the work on the eagle is awesome in particular, especially when it comes to getting that feather effect working so nicely.
As well as that, I also love all of the little stand-out bits of the terrain. The work on the terrain is fascinating and I think that the undergrowth, flowers and shrubs have all been chosen really nicely.
I think we should be looking to make more dioramas. We always have so many miniatures and bitz lying around that they could be turned into really awesome representations of our hobby. I am so eager to break out some of my bits and pieces and do work like that of thedace and what Free has been planning.
Victorian Sci-Fi Battle Report by hutch
Last but not least, we turn our attention to a battle report! It's always fun seeing these. This one is a bit of fun because hutch has been playing around with a pretty epic Victorian Sci-Fi clash. Big, clanking walkers and vehicles clash with men sporting exceptionally awesome facial hair on a rather epic tabletop.
This battle report focuses on The Battle of Horst’s Ferry. The British are clashing with the Prussians here where the Prussians are looking to crush the escape routes and stop the British from escaping. This means loads of awesome walkers and some humming skyships that give everything an amazing sense of scale.
What's nice about this battle report is that it does what I love. It features loads of awesome narrative details and little snippets of storytelling alongside a rundown of exactly how the battle ticks from turn to turn. The written portion of the battle report is then matched by some excellent photography showing off the different elements of the unfolding conflict.
This is super fun and it would be great to see even more of these popping up. I really like that we got to see a tabletop featuring loads of awesomely painted buildings, trees, weird alien flora and full armies too. It's really, really cool!

I have at least three of the minis from the first Zone Alfa picture. Both fat dudes with guns and girl on the end. Those look good… mine still need paint despite being in the house for years.
Same story here. I had those figures for years, since the 90’s, and I never knew what to do with them. I bought them simply because they were Copplestone. I am glad they finally have a purpose.
Thanks very much for the button. It’s so much appreciated.
I’ve really enjoyed doing the Dioramas that I’ve done.
Fantastic stuff! Keep on with the inspiration… ???
Thanks for the kind words @brennon, I was busy this past weekend demoing Zona Alfa and playing ‘Fantastic Battles’, so I did not have time to watch the Backstage show. I did not even know I won a Golden Button. I am surprised and pleased that my good deed for the decade has not gone unnoticed!
Thanks to everyone.
@brennon Thanks for the positive feedback and kind words about our little campaign. To answer your question we use all sorts of rulessets and just modify them to suit our needs. We have used G.A.S.L.I.G.H.T. All Quiet on the Martian Front, Warhammer Greatwar, Full Thrust and Aeronef to name a few. I am currently looking at Ospreys The Men Who Would Be Kings as another alternative to use when playing really big games. Each rules set has its own benefits and disadvantages so I going to say that the set we settle on will most likely have some home brew… Read more »
