Ancient Greeks by gorram

We start off this week with a look at some Historical wargaming goodness. This focuses on gorram who has been working away on some Ancient Greeks for use in Mortal Gods. This was one of the projects from the Spring Cleaning Hobby Challenge and it seems like things have gone well!

The focus of the project was on getting a whole bunch of miniatures from one of the Mortal Gods sets painted up. The box, containing a fair amount of Victrix Greeks, had been languishing for a while and so gorram thought that it was probably about time to get painting.

These miniatures have come to life over a pretty short period of time! One thing that I was particularly enjoying was that the miniatures are all quite bright and poppy. I like that we have a good mix of different primary colours in the mix from yellow and green through to blue and red. All of this is tied together by the white armour to make them feel like a coherent force but the colour also makes them feel like individuals.

As things have got to a head, the miniatures have started to pop all the more. The transfers look fantastic on the shields and really bring the miniatures to life. It works so well with the well-painted bronze armour, faces and armour to make a really fun and complete faction. There is something fun about painting Ancients and I think Mortal Gods lets you do it on a slightly smaller scale than most games. So, it gives you a chance to have fun with painting Historical miniatures without feeling daunted by the amount of painting!

A Song Of Ice & Fire by horus500

Next up, we look to an update from horus500 who has been working on a few different projects since January of 2022. The focus seems to have been on A Song Of Ice & Fire and I am really liking how the different miniatures have been coming out.

There is a distinctly large Wildling presence at the moment within this collection. I really like the Giants from CMON but I've not seen them painted until now. I think horus500 has done a solid job on these and I love how the expressions on their faces have been captured.

Who could say no to a collection of war mammoths either? Again, really good work on these, especially when it comes to the fur. I think that is the most striking part of these miniatures alongside that tusk work.

It isn't all Wildlings though. There are also some rank and file soldiers marching into the midst of battle in Westeros too.

These miniatures have come together really nicely. What I particularly liked is that horus500 has been saying that the focus has been on characterful and thematic games rather than simply min-maxing. I think that's a great way to approach wargaming and hopefully, it leads to even more fun games between friends as horus500 mentions!

Armada by ugleb

Last but not least, we move from one Fantasy world to another. From Westeros to Pannithor and a look at the Armada fleet that has been coming together from ugleb over in the projects.

I am always impressed when people paint up boats and ships and make them interesting. ugleb has done a solid job on these, especially in picking out all of the details on the ships themselves. I also like that the gold there mirrors and matches up with the yellow in the sails.

One of the things I really liked about this painting project was that it shows off how poppy you can make these ships. You want them to stand out on the high seas and look recognisably yours. Bright yellow sails will probably do that! I also liked the additional bit of weathering that you see on the metallic prows of some of the ships.

Even the cool watery bases that these ships sit on made me pay attention! I like how the rippling waves have been captured with a mix of different blue tones and a splash of white. It really works and I think adding that white to the base edges also gives the illusion of them continuing beyond the rim.
