About the Project

A project about my journey back into the hobby after a long nearly 2 year period of really really sparse hobby related activities. Thanks World of Warcraft Classic release and, maybe to a lesser extent Covid.

Been a long week, but a little bit here and there meant I got the squad completed.

Now on to a new HH model,

The Deimos rhino.

I really enjoyed building this one, was really nice, and fitted well together well.

I hope to think up what scheme I want to go with and then get to work over the weekend

Its taken me some time to get him sorted, but I’m pretty happy with him.

This is my first completed forgeworld model, and I have to say its been really nice to work with.

edging ever closer to my first completed Forgeworld model.

With some luck I will have him done this weekend. I have some bits to finish on the main body , the right shoulder and a bit on the weapons. Then that leaves the head to be done.

Bit of a slow week hobby wise, but some progress was bade atleast!

Legion tactical squad 2 are well under way, in face i think its just a bit of tidying up of base colours and then the detail bits, followed finally by the weapons.

Slow progress week

Finally more progress was made on the Lord Commander!

Slow progress week

I’m hoping I can get a bit more done on him this weekend, But I’m making sure I just don’t over push myself to paint when I feel like doing something else!

Some hobby while watching XLBS!

last night i managed to throw some GW Astrogranite texture on the bases so that it would be dry by morning. Then before I get a proper sit down this morning, I painted over the dry bases with some Agrax Earthshade.

XLBS time

When able to sit down with the XLBS on in the background I was able to start blocking in some colour on the 5 marines on the painting table.

I’m hopeful I can get these guys done today. So on to the bolters!

Well its Saturday evening, and I think thats the longest I’ve had a brush in my hand for quite some time.

Progress was made on Eidolon’s main body, and the second half of my first tactical squad.

Hopefully tomorrow i can make some more solid progress, but I think I’m all painted out for today!

Having carefully cut all the pieces off the sprues and washed them, and left them to dry while at work yesterday… Then having them all primed last night letting them dry over night.. I was able to break the airbrush out and start on the purple.

Progress will follow tonight with the progress thats been made.. If there is any of course!

Well its Friday morning, just getting ready for work. But I’ve managed to get some small work done on Eidolon’s base.

Base primedBase primed

Next I got some basic base paints down, some metal work, blacks, cabling and stone work. Then an all over coat of that necron wash shade, Cryptec Armourshade Gloss.

Reall i am just winging this, so once it dries and i get home from work I will have a look and maybe throw in some black shade, then bring the metals back a little before adding rush and more weathering .

Well this is the biggest Forgeworld model I have tackled … Ive always been nervous to buy and build them as I hate working with the resin. At least it is better than finecast!

So with a quick look everything looks superb, detail wise, Ive cleaned up the base sections. and given them that much needed wash and let them dry while at work.

I cleaned up washed, and stuck some pins in the main body section so that i could get a good solid join with the base.

To set the model in his scenic base it looks like I need to leave 2 sections loose so that I can remove the playable base when needed. Im not sure about this, I might look into some kind of magnets so that it all sticks more securely.

Hopefully more updates tomorrow!

I was a bit later than normal getting home from work tonight but I still managed to get the base coat down on the built 15 marines.

Really happy I did as it keeps this little bit of hobby momentum  going.

Managed to finish the first Tartaros terminator squad and have the first 5 members of a tactical style squad done.

Pretty happy with the turn out, played about with some pigments on the bases, think it worked ok to add abut more colour to the grey bases.

Next i need to do some building, have the second 5 men from the tactical squad under the knife at the moment.

Opening units

This should be my objective of the day, I will attempt to get something else build for the army too so I can prime both together.

Enough of the text!

Finally a bit of colour in this project…

First tester Emperor’s Children model. A Tartaros terminator from the Burning of Prospero set.

I think he is done...I think he is done...

That is my first tester model and I think I’m happy enough to move on to the rest of the squad..

Legion?!

So what legion will I be Selecting ?

This is tough and I am a big Space Wolves, and Dark Angel fan. I love Abaddon the despoiler, and his Black Legion. But maybe this project was an opportunity to paint something different than greys, greens, and black marines.

I wont be playing competitively at all, perhaps looking at my 40k history I will play very rarely as I seem to be a collector first of all. That means rules mean little to me in my decision. What means more is the models, and something different than my 40K armies, for example my 40k Dark Angels do have some of the forgeworld HH models already.

So one loyal legion and one traitor legion I think will be a good start.

Traitor choice is easy for me, its the Emperor’s Children. A very different paint scheme than I currently have, the models from FW look great, and Fulgim is one of my favourite HH books.

Loyalist wise, its  a bit tougher as the pull of the Wolves and First legion is strong, but currently I’m leaning towards Blood Angels. I love the Chapter Master Raldoron model so that is a strong pull.

“Going from the pursuit of perfection in all things to ultimate depravity isn’t a journey anybody makes in one step, it’s a series of small ones – each one justifiable in its own isolated way. But after you’ve taken a hundred of those small steps, you’re a long way from who you were at the start.”
― Graham McNeill, Fulgrim

So I have been humming and hawing about buying the new Horus Heresy, Age of Darkness boxed set. There were a couple of things holding me back:

  • Price
  • My current back log
  • Ive not been doing any hobby for a good while

I’ll start at the bottom, I am still in love with the while Warhammer 40k background and setting, that love has never dwindled even through my hobby droughts. So the interest is still there, I just have to curb my video gaming and let my hobby blossom again.

I have over the last few weeks sold off the parts of my pile of shame that I will never get round too. I kept a few bits for my main armies that I can see myself wanting to get round too at some point. So While my backlog is not gone It looks more tidy.

Finally Price.. When they announced the set, it was for sure going to be expensive. Thankfully places like the OTT store exist to at least  help make it more manageable. With my feelings around the other two stumbling blocks improved, along with the OTT discount, I felt this was a worthy investment.

With this project I  document my journey back in to the swing of things. Hopefully it will serve as a nice motivating tool as well.
