Steamforged Games Updates Fans On Dark Souls RPG Errors
April 20, 2022 by brennon
Following issues with Dark Souls: The Roleplaying Game, Steamforged Games has put together an update on how they are going to deal with some of the errors (both mechanically and in presentation) found within the books.
Dark Souls: The Roleplaying Game - Update // Steamforged Games
Here is what they had to say...
"We at Steamforged Games would like to issue a sincere apology regarding the errors that have come to light in the DARK SOULS: The Roleplaying Game. We want to thank the community for all the feedback we have received through our customer support channels and online. We are listening to your comments and recognise the importance of the issues that have arisen.
We want to make it clear that we take this matter extremely seriously and therefore have decided the best course of action is to order reprints of the book, issuing replacement copies to those customers who have already bought or pre-ordered the Standard Edition and/or Collector’s Edition.
The same applies for the PDF version we previously announced. Every customer who buys a copy of the printed rulebook will get a free PDF copy, with a release date and details on how to get your copy coming soon.
We ask for a little patience as we gather more detailed information regarding these reprints, the timescales involved, and how best to ensure we resolve this for each affected customer. As soon as we have these details, we will release them. In the meantime, if you have any issues or questions, please contact us through our support hub."
So, a good way to deal with the issues that have arisen within the book for those who have been diving in. The errors that popped up were found by users over on Reddit and after putting together quite the list, it seems Steamforged Games are going to be taking that and using it for the basis of their update.
I like that Steamforged is going to be replacing both physical and digital options even if it might take a little while.
Have you given Dark Souls: The Roleplaying Game a go?

It’s good they are re-doing & replacing the first run did they fire the proof reader for this screw up.?
I kind of wonder if it was the proof reader who screwed up.
Could also have been the one who send the wrong ‘final’ copy to the printer …
most probably a group of people.
yup … shit like this never happens due to one person.
That’s what watching all those flight crash documentaries taught me 😀
“We want to make it clear that we take this matter extremely seriously” – they should have taken making a good product in the first place extremely seriously.
Very true – but, at least they are fixing it rather than shrugging their shoulders.
Yes but this is no video game where they can just issue a patch. It’s a physical product. Someone will need to pay for this and all the “misprints” are just waste. That’s what really annoys me. If it had been a case of “we got delivered a bad print with glued together pages and we didn’t catch that” it’s something different. But seemingly skimping on the proof read part is just… I don’t know. Does not inspire trust I feel. That was completely avoidable IMHO.
Live and learn. They have admitted the problem and are fixing it. There are hobby companies who don’t fix things and nobody seems to call them out. I doubt SFG will make this same mistake again.
It just feels that this is happening way too often. But if they get replacements in peoples hands that’s definitively more than some other companies did…
Free League send out alpha and beta pdf’s to backers before going to print. This picks up most errors and also any rules that need clarification. Maybe a bit cheeky getting your customers to be unpaid proof readers but it gets the job done 🙂
But at least those backers get something (early access, insight, power of changes) in return and nobody is forced to do it.
Exactly! I really like Free League’s approach. It’s symbiotic—they get free proofreading, and we get early access to the rules (not to mention, finished books with fewer errors!).
Those aren’t errors! You just bought a previous game, that’s all.
Talisman is the first game I remember with errors, although they were called “FAQ’s”. 😛
> It’s a physical product. Rant ahead! (: Personally, I never liked RPG books as a coffee table hardback. They’re more expensive, they scuff easily, and the core rules pictures almost never helped you learn how to play the game. Sometimes I wonder if anyone buying these books actually plays the RPGs with their friends. With a PDF of a campaign, you just print out the scenario you’re playing, and the monster stat blocks you’re using. No need to bring another hardback to the table. You can even cut up the adventure as you play, as text and picture handouts.… Read more »
There’s a good reason for not pre-ordering products … this is yet another example.
One really has to wonder what sort of cock up caused these errors to go completely unnoticed until the customers got their copy.
It’s almost as if the proof read copy never made it into print and no one (with any knowledge of the English language) checked the final product (they probably checked if the letters matched the ones in the PDF/source file).
Good customer service.
maybe they’ll take out all the unnecessary pictures and halve the page count as well
I cannot even imagine what this is going to cost them! It’s really a shame. I’m now very glad that I decided to hold off on pre-ordering… yikes!
