The Umbrella Academy: The Board Game offers you the chance to take on the role of the diverse and sometimes rather odd members of The Umbrella Academy. During this cooperative affair, you'll pick heroes, choose a villain to face off against and seek to stop threats on the board using your hand of cards.
Set Up // The Umbrella Academy: The Board Game
Gameplay for The Umbrella Academy is pretty simple. A deck of Hazards will be laid out across the board and your heroes can move to different locations and use their Skill Cards to lay down Battle Tokens which help you defeat said Hazards.

Some cards activate the special skills of your heroes and will stay in play, offering you additional benefits. You can also collect Advantage Cards which will offer up boons for your group as they continue to work through mounting Hazards.
How To Play // The Umbrella Academy: The Board Game
Any Hazards that you don't deal with will have a massive effect on gameplay and change things. So, you'll have to plan well and keep an eye on who is dealing with which Hazard. Each hero also has Family Feud cards in their deck which can pop out and give you even more problems to overcome!

Each hero has their own specialities and the diverse cast of villains that you'll be coming up against should provide you with a range of interesting challenges to overcome.
Deluxe Edition Pledge
You'll also have noted that the game comes with a plethora of plastic miniatures representing the heroes and villains in the game.

The Kickstarter focuses on the Deluxe Pledge which you see above. That means that as well as the core components (the hero miniatures and the villain tokens) you'll also get your hands on a bunch of plastic miniatures to stand in for the tokens. The basic version of the game that will come to retail in 2023 won't have access to a number of exclusive elements as you can see above.
If you're a fan of The Umbrella Academy then this might be worth a look. It's certainly cool to see Mantic stepping away from the traditional miniature-based "dungeon crawl" style affair and offer a different type of board game experience. Gameplay looks quick, fun and intuitive and should be a bit of a brain teaser for folks who like games Sentinels Of The Multiverse or Marvel Champions.

Certainly a interesting looking game.
I backed and love the Hellboy board game, but I’ve got zero familiarity with the source material here so it just doesn’t inspire. Minis look great, wonder if they’ll offer a minis only pledge?
And canceled already while they could have reached the minimum funding goal (within a day or so) … weird.
I hope they’ve got an explanation for that.
They have. It was not a randomly determined decision. It was a choice for specific reasons.
care to explain ?
’cause non backers are left in the dark at the moment.
It’s not for me to make statements on Mantic’s behalf. I’m just saying it wasn’t on a whim.
sure … but they’ve been silent and only backers have been given any info.
That makes me think there’s more to this … and that’s those reasons need to be kept secret for reasons that make no sense to outsiders (yet).
I’d suggest that the backers are the people they are obliged to update, so that info has been targeted directly at them. Not a grand conspiracy to keep everyone else in the dark ?
They might just assume nobody else would care
Not sure what is going on but it does look interesting. There is a backers message titled ‘The Board Game will return!’. I like the tv show so was thinking I might try the comic and maybe back the game.
