More Details On Necromunda: Ash Wastes Expansion Revealed

Games Workshop has been talking a little more about Ash Wastes, the new expansion for Necromunda which is going to take things beyond the confines of Hive Primus and out into the irradiated wastes, haunted by deadly gangs and xenos creatures.

This expansion is going to be part of a brand new boxed set, as you might have guessed, but it will also feature a series of new books that are intended to explore the different factions vying for control of the wastes. I would assume we'll be seeing the Ash Wastes Gangers themselves but also all manner of mutants that have tried to make the wastes their home.
Andy Hoare mentioned that the factions you'll be meeting will be familiar to longtime inhabitants of the underhive. So, that should certainly get some cogs turning.

It has also been noted that we're going to be getting some updates to the way games play. Things need to be tweaked for this expansion considering the open plains that sit before your gangers. Big vehicles and new terrain is going to be in the mix including the one shown in the trailer. You'll be able to dive into big convoy ambushes across the irradiated dunes - very cool indeed.
After some awkward years, in the beginning, Necromunda feels like it's in a good place. You only really need the Core Rulebook and your House book of choice in order to play and then you can dive in with just a plastic box and some friends. It's certainly better than the book bonanza it once was.
Hopefully, Ash Wastes will keep things tight rather than just ballooning out again!

Ooh great for a headhunters squad to patrol for trouble maker’s an zenos/mutant groups. fighting an clearing out the shanty towns with all them dusty figures on the shelves hardly out on the table.
Would love to play Necromunda, again.
But its impossible to get into. Too many books. To many limited run products.
Did I mention too many books. Like way to many.
I don’t think it’s as bad as it was. At its core, you just need the Rulebook… https://www.games-workshop.com/en-GB/Necromunda-Rulebook-2018-eng …and then whichever House Book you want for your particular gang of choice. A bit like a Codex for 40K. Then, Peril and Outcast if you want some extra bits… https://www.games-workshop.com/en-GB/Necromunda-The-Book-of-Peril-EN-2019 https://www.games-workshop.com/en-GB/necromunda-book-of-the-outcast-hb-eng-2021 Yes, it’s not quite the same as picking up the original book that had everything in there, but I think there is a lot more detail built into each of the House books (codexes) than previous versions of the game. You only really need to buy one (or two) boxes… Read more »
Thanks, I really didnt articulate my point well. What I meant by there being to many books, is the fact that every faction having its own book you have to buy to play that faction. That, for me, is unacceptable for a small-scale skirmish game. I would be okay with a single rulebook, and another for all the factions. But not separate books, sorry thats a bridge too far. I want to play multiple factions when I get into skirmish games. Building multiple factions is a huge part of the fun for me. So that is what I mean when… Read more »
You “can” get a game in with just the two books, HOWEVER if you’re looking at playing a campaign game you’ll find the info is spread across various books (like for example the Black Market/Trading list is in the latest “Book of the Outcast”). In fact you’ll probably need all of the “Book of……” rule books get gather all the rules that are spread piecemeal across this series of four rule books (for things like how to play as an “Outlaw” or Law Abiding” Gang. The “House of…….” books also contain the rules for the various Guilds and Alliances (you… Read more »
No, not at all – you need exactly 2 books. The rulebook and your house book. Nothing else.
People that have your complaint keep misreading the intent of the game, which is to provide you with a sandbox where you can play a Wargame RPG. It was always this, even in the 90’s. You pick and choose whatever it is you wish to use for a given campaign. What you do NOT do is play it as a competitive game, because it wasn’t written for that, at all.
Certainly seems like the way to approach it. I even clarified with the GW Webstore chat about this earlier because I was interested. Yep, just the Core Rulebook, House Book + your box of miniatures (which are usually pretty cheap).
After playing with the Palanite Enforcers kit recently – I was very interested in buying a gang and giving it a go.
I’ve been hoarding one of everything 😀
You miss my point. I didn’t state it correctly.
The entire awesome point of skirmish games is small number of models. Which allows you to build several different “warbands” to keep variety up and enjoyment up.
Necromunda Has too many books… period. A book for every skirmish faction is too many books, period. It goes against the grain of what skirmish games are all about, in my mind.
Yes, but once again, they don’t seem to view it, or present it as a simple skirmish game, but rather as a hybrid of an RPG-Wargame, hence the books and the world building effort.
Of course, the fact they want to keep selling models and have a lore justification for them means they keep growing the setting, which has the added benefit (for them) of having multiple books to sell.
I feel the same. I keep away from GW games for a couple of years – tired of the owerhelming amount of rules update, constant push tu get you buy new products to stay in the picture… I figured out I enjoy ess demanding games which are actually also more fun and quite cheaper to get into.
The Ash Wastets setting is cool though. Could be a hint to dust off my oldschool Ratlings and start playing in the Ash Wastes ( with a different rules set probably).
I, for one, am *very* excited about this. My wallet is going on a “what? what’s happening?” vibe, though
I do rather like the thought of Mad Max Necromunda. I hope a cross between gaslands and Necromunda is in the works. I do hope we get some plastic vehicles and perhaps some normal settlement builds to add to the 40k worlds. I think these is still months off so best not to get to excited too early.
I’m no so much interested in the game but I am excited to see what miniatures come out for this. Already Necromunda is a treasure trove for miniatures to use for other games such as Stargrave and Five Parsecs From Home.
I am also in the ‘oh god how many more books’ camp and it is a major turn off. When they first relaunched Necromunda they were clearly carving up the ruleset into expansions that came out in rapid succession. It was clearly planned for sales.
Now I need convincing that the books are actually optional, or if they are still spreading stuff around to make a few pages of each book relevant to all players for the complete experience.
Hmmm probable candidates for the new “Ash Waste” rules are…. Ash Raiders Scavvies RatSkins (although they are probably going to be renamed and redesigned, but the mechanics of the Gang with be similar) Spyre Hunters (worst thing ever to hit Necromunda, but players scream out for them to be in the game). So that looks like probably FIVE more rulebooks (Ash Waste Rulebook and four new “House of…..” rulebooks plus limited availability packs of “Tactics” cards). So everyone better start saving now if you want to keep up. If the new box set is going to contain vehicles and mounted… Read more »
