They actually went and did it. Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine, possibly one of the best video games based in the grimdark universe by Games Workshop, is FINALLY getting a sequel. Focus Entertainment and Saber Interactive showed off the trailer at the Game Awards this week...

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 Announcement Trailer

I reviewed the original game back in 2011 as one of my first big articles for the site and I bloody loved it. Sure, it was janky in places and there were plenty of wrinkles to iron out but the core gameplay loop of Space Marine was superb.

It bled Warhammer 40,000 with every bone-crunching sound of a boltgun being fired; every Ork that got eviscerated on the edge of a chainsword. To this day I don't think, bar Dawn Of War, there has been a game that managed to make being a Space Marine and existing in a digital grimdark feel quite so accurate.

Space Marine II Captain Titus

Leading the charge was Captain Titus of the Ultramarines who returns to Space Marine 2. At the end of the original game, he was accused of being touched by the warp and heresy and found himself carted off by the Inquisition and a group of surly-looking Black Templars. A fair few years seem to have passed since then (noting the extra studs in his skull) and he looks to have crossed the Rubicon Primaris too. What else has he faced in the intervening years?

Mark Strong doesn't make a return as the voice of Titus which is a bit of a shame but Clive Standen seems well suited considering his time spent in Vikings. We also see the foe switch from the Orks and forces of Chaos to the numberless swarms of the Tyranids.

Space Marine II Captain Titus Vs Tyranid

I am crossing everything for this game. I want it to be great and from the small snippets of gameplay we got at the end, it could be another winner. I am incredibly eager to see what they've done with Titus since his first appearance and if they are able to carry over that brutal feel of the original game.

Are you excited for the return of Space Marine?
